That old man is probably around 40. I developed a system in Iraq of guessing ages by figuring how old I thought someone was and subtracting 15 years. Rough places tend to age people faster.

Great pictures.

They look Irish, but none of them are carrying shovels and it is still daylight.
Sack them all.

Tibetan pilgrims, some of whom have travelled on foot for weeks from the remotest parts of the Tibetan plateau, prostrate themselves at the entrance to the Jokhang Temple - the holiest shrine in Vajrayana Buddhism, Lhasa, Tibet, 21st October 2006

The slow boat from Kuala Besut to the Perhentian Islands, South China Sea, Malaysia, 21st January 2007. I was sure this old puffer was going to capsize with every large breaker that hit her - but we managed to just stay afloat. We we aboard with a crowd of locals and supplies for the Islands. The swells were huge and not long after putting to sea this little kid and many others were chucking up over the side. The Perhentians were deserted and beautiful - paradise.

A view of Lhasa from the roof of the Jokhang, with the Potala Palace in the right distance, 22nd October 2006.

This square has been the focal point for many of the Tibetan protests against the Chinese occupation over the long years, many of them bloody. The PLA keep a discreet watch on the pilgrims walking the kora around the temple, with CCTV and plain-clothed goons - any hint of dissent or political gathering usually prompts a quick appearance from the army, all suited and booted. This was in 2006, I'm sure it's a lot worse there now.
