What's the Ethiopian tower?
Shes never interfered with me. I have no complaints about her.

Awesome photographs stiv.

What is the giant wheel in the Syria photo for? Is it some kind of mill, and what runs it?

That's one of the Axumite Stellae in Axum Ethiopia. This is the same town that has the church that supposedly hold the Ark of the covenant. There are fallen stellae all around this area and damned if I can remember any of the other factsw of what all is there, but there's a ton of cool stuff in this town. The Italians are actually going to return at least one they stole from here and there's a huge one that's fallen that was massive. These are the tallest single stone of thier type outside of Egypt. If you look closely there are doors and windows the theory is that these were built to house spirits.

Jaeger those water wheels are in a town called Hama, and the wheels are called "Noria" they do work though not to the degree they used to but they are super cool. A guy took us into his yard and we got really close to one they are really unique and loud! They were used for irrigation at one time but no longer. The Oronte (?) river powers them.

On a technical note: These photos were pre digi and were all shot on medium format film and the copies are taken from prints hence the contrast, so "I'm" not crazy about the way they look but until I get my high end scanner and can scan the negs that's about as best I can do for now. I could retire today and fill the rest of my days scanning all the stuff I have.

Thanks for all the kind words I'll post more when I get a bit more time.

Best,
Stiv

Thanks stiv, I thought it was a water wheel but I wasn't sure because I couldn't see the water source. That is pretty super-cool though. I can only imagine the noise from having one on your house.

I thought they were real. Thought it was a v tall narrow tower rather than a stela.
