Paper wasps are usually what gets us. No hornets around here.
One diamond back, one moccasin and one ribbon snake spotted on the Corp Woods job this week.

Always have a gazillion of them around the house. They're kinder and gentler out here than they were in Michigan. Never been stung.

I haven't been nailed by a paper wasp in over 10 years - despite the dozens of nests they make around the house and barn and hundreds that fly in and out of the nooks and crannies of the house siding spring and fall. Our Eastern species are different than those yellowish-red ones you all have down and out there. Some say they sting more painful than hornets, but I don't think so - maybe the same or less than imo. Still annoying though.

Yellow jackets & black jackets - that's another story. I get stung at least every other year by those bastards. I count my blessings that I've never been in a mess of bald faced hornets, though I have seen a lot of nests - which I guess is why it's easier to avoid them. Some places & years you have to keep your eyes open for them - counted 12 nests over a hot and dry 35 acres one year. One of my plot centers was going to fall right into one of their entrance holes in the ground - had to adjust that by a few paces. Another cruise plot center fell within 6' of a large Aspen that yellow jackets had made a nest in the cavity of about 3' off the ground, then at the end on my way out, another ground nest near the road - I can't count how many nests I have seen over the last decade, or how many times I've been stung by those in nests I didn't see.

Painful little bastards (2x that of a bee imo) and the bald faced put one forest tech I used to work with in the hospital and killed another forester I knew of in Idaho or Montana.

Watch those diamondbacks! Those are another nail in the coffin - Those are what my cousin gets in her yard.

One guy down in TX was complaining about "leaf cutter" ants - that he can't get rid of them. Have you noticed any of those on your job sites?

I've rarely seen leaf cutters, mostly fire and red harvester ants.

Bumble bees have given me the wost stings so far. I accidentally dug a nest out with a hyd tree spade and they tore me up, hitting on top of my head 3-4 times. It was like a 100* and I got dizzy and had to lay in the cab of the truck for over an hour.

Last spring we were fishing on the river and asps were raining down on us out of the trees. We were doing some amusing jigs/dances trying to get them off.

Wow- Natures diversity never fails to impress. I've been stung by caterpillars when I was a young boy, but nothing even remotely resembling that!

he reactions are sometimes localized to the affected area but are often very severe, radiating up a limb and causing burning, swelling, nausea, headache, abdominal distress, rashes, blisters, and sometimes chest pain, numbness, or difficulty breathing (Eagleman 2008). Additionally, it is not unusual to find sweating from the welts or hives at the site of the sting. Ironically, the resemblance of the larvae to soft, colorful cotton balls encourages people to pick them up and pet them.

Oh, the good old days. Yellow-jackets are probably the most serious problem in northwest Montana if you do woods work. In a good year, they are all over the place. Bald-faced hornets not so much, but I took three in the forehead on a cutting job up the Yaak. I'm not allergic, but I've got a feeling about how Dick Cheney's hunting partner felt when he got a face full of shotgun pellets.
