Hang gliders and parasails

Postby svizzerams » Wed Jul 10, 2013 3:16 am

My little village is home to one of the premier hang gliding/parsailing spots on the west coast. During a contest or tournament there may be several dozen circling Chelan Butte finding the thermals. I recently got a new lens, 100-400mm zoom, and wanted to practice using it and thought to head up and see if anyone was flying last Saturday. On Sunday I spent a some time shooting the landing area and then had a rare treat of flying out over the plateau and seeing how a Cessna 172 can ride the thermals just like the hang gliders and parasails. At one point we were rising at over 1200 feet/min toward the bottoms of the clouds at 9000 feet or so. Disclaimer - I am not a hang glider or parasailor - but I love watching them and the science behind the sport is intriguing.

Looking south - the Waterville Plateau - generator of awesome thermals.
