Things fall down

Postby coldharvest » Mon Feb 11, 2013 5:09 am

One in four newly diagnosed cancer patients lacks support from family and friends, a report today shows.

About 70,000 sufferers each year are not given enough help by those closest to them, and of those, 20,000 face cancer alone.

As a result, more than half of isolated patients had skipped meals and a quarter had not been able to wash properly, according to Macmillan Cancer Support.

In its report, Facing The Fight Alone, the charity said common reasons for isolation were family members and friends living too far away or patients simply having no one to turn to.

Other sufferers said their loved ones were frightened of their illness.

Ciarán Devane, chief executive of Macmillan, said: ‘Isolation can have a shattering impact on people living with cancer. Patients are going hungry, missing medical appointments and even deciding to reject treatment altogether.’

Each year, 325,000 people in Britain are diagnosed with cancer.

Our world is not put off by sex but the Victorians sure had a hipper and more humane attitude towards illness and death.

In my opinion the ballsiest thing anyone can do is comfort the dying. Whomever does that is certainly no coward.

Exactly. Kudos to anyone who looks after their kin at home rather than send them off to a Care Home/Gulag. Sometimes it's too much though.

I will tell you why; so shall my anticipation
prevent your discovery, and your secrecy to the King and
queene: moult no feather. I have of late, (but wherefore
I know not) lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises;
and indeed, it goes so heavily with my disposition;
that this goodly frame the earth, seems to me a sterrill
promontory; this most excellent canopy the air,
look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this Majesticall roofe,
fretted with golden fire: why, it appeares no other thing
to me, than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours.
What a piece of work is a man! How noble in
reason, how infinite in faculty! In form and moving
how express and admirable! In action how like an Angel!
in apprehension how like a god! The beauty of the
world! The paragon of animals! And yet to me, what is
this quintessence of dust? Man delights not me; no,
nor Woman neither;though by your smiling you seem
to say so
I know the law. And I have spent my entire life in its flagrant disregard.

and the coldest, then (in order) you get:

Wigeon - they start in darkness, whistling overhead and I shoot volleys into the brown clouds and listen for the thump(s).
Swans - come in low just at first light like Lancaster bombers beating the air into submission with their wings (where I go there are thousands of them and it is an awesome sight and sound). I don't shoot these. Oh no.
Geese - to be fair the different variants move at different times but I don't want to bore you. Pulse still hits 180 when I hear that ankh ankh above the gale.
Teal - tricky buggers move fast in the half light.
and finally just when you think it's all over and you're unloaded and having a swig of something warming a couple of fat mallard get off their arse and fly over you.

I would imagine less than 0.000001% of the population could tell you the order the birds move in. This is a national disgrace but one I'm glad of.

Do you have a faithful canine companion that fetches the birds after you've shot the volleys at the birds?
