Russia to deploy Borei class submarines to Mediterranean

Postby plaintext » Sat Jun 01, 2013 10:10 pm

The Game is Afoot..

(Reuters) - Russia plans to resume nuclear submarine patrols in the southern seas after a hiatus of more than 20 years following the break-up of the Soviet Union, Itar-Tass news agency reported on Saturday, in another example of efforts to revive Moscow's military.

The plan to send Borei-class submarines, designed to carry 16 long-range nuclear missiles, to the southern hemisphere follows President Vladimir Putin's decision in March to deploy a naval unit in the Mediterranean Sea on a permanent basis starting this year.

"The revival of nuclear submarine patrols will allow us to fulfill the tasks of strategic deterrence not only across the North Pole but also the South Pole," state-run Itar-Tass cited an unnamed official in the military General Staff as saying.

The official said the patrols would be phased in over several years. The Yuri Dolgoruky, the first of eight Borei-class submarines that Russia hopes to launch by 2020, entered service this year.

Putin has stressed the importance of a strong and agile military since returning to the presidency last May. In 13 years in power, he has often cited external threats when talking of the need for a reliable armed forces and Russian political unity.

Fears of a nuclear confrontation between Russia and the United States has eased in recent years, and the Cold War-era foes signed a landmark treaty in 2010 setting lower limits on the size of their long-range nuclear arsenals.

But the limited numbers of warheads and delivery vehicles such as submarines that they committed to under the New START treaty are still enough to devastate the world. Putin has made clear Russia will continue to upgrade its arsenal.

Russia's land-launched Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) would fly over the northern part of the globe, as would those fired from submarines in the northern hemisphere.

Both the Borei-class submarines and the Bulava ballistic missiles they carry were designed in the 1990s, when the science and defense industries were severely underfunded.

Russia sees the Bulava as the backbone of its future nuclear deterrence, but the program has been set back by several botched launches over the past few years.

SSBN Borei Class Nuclear-Powered Submarines, Russian Federation
Borei Class is a Russian fourth-generation nuclear-powered missile submarine. It is intended to eventually replace the ageing Delta III and Typhoon Class submarines and become an important deterrent of the Russian Navy. It is the first class of submarines developed by Russia since the soviet era.

Designated Project 935, it began in 1996 to manufacture the first unit of the Borei Class submarine. The project name was changed to Project 955 and the submarine was redesigned to accommodate the new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) Bulava (SS-NX-30), in place of the abandoned R-39UTTH Bark missile.

Currently Yury Dolgoruky, Alexander Nevsky, Vladimir Monomakh and Knyaz Vladimir are the four submarines ordered under this project. These vessels were designed by Rubin Marine Equipment Design Bureau and built by Northern Machine Building Enterprise (Sevmash shipyard).

Russia has plans to build eight Borei Class submarines for its naval fleet by 2015.
Development of the Yury Dolgoruky vessel

The first in the class of the submarines is the Yury Dolgoruky vessel. The total cost of the submarine is $713m, including the research and development expenditure of $280m.

Project 955A, the higher version of Project 955, might build the Vladimir Monomakh and other follow-up submarines. This programme would have various improvements and would have a different hull shape.
Construction of the Borei Class submarines
"It is the first class of submarines developed by Russia since the soviet era."

The first submarine, Yury Dolgoruky, was laid down in November 1996. She was launched in February 2008 and began her sea trials in June 2009. The ship was formally inducted into the Russian Navy in January 2013.

Alexander Nevsky (K-550), the second submarine, was laid down in March 2004 and launched in December 2010. The ship is expected to be commissioned in 2013, after completing a series of sea trials that started in October 2011.

Vladimir Monomakh is the third Borei Class submarine. She was laid down in March 2006 and launched in December 2012. The fourth Borei Class ship, Knyaz Vladimir, was laid down in July 2012.
Bulava SLBM missiles on the Russian subs

The Bulava SLBM (designated RSM-56 in the START treaty), which is based on the Topol M design, would be fitted onto the Borei Class submarines.
"Project 955A, the higher version of Project 955, might build the Vladimir Monomakh and other follow-up submarines."

These missiles are developed by the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology and would be launched on the Project 955 platform.

The missile is 12.1m long and has a diameter of 2.1m (including the launch container). It weighs a total of 36.8 metric tonnes and is capable of carrying six to ten re-entry vehicles with a yield of 100kt-150kt each.

The Borei Class submarines have lower displacement levels than the Typhoon Class, which can carry a similar number of missiles. Yury Dolgoruky would carry 16 of these missiles, while the improved versions of the Borei Class submarines might carry 20 of them.

The submarine will also carry six of the SS-N-15 missiles. Each SS-N-15 is a 533mm calibre anti-ship missile has a range of 45km and is capable of being fitted with a 20kt warhead or a type 40 torpedo.
Vessel propulsion systems

The submarine is powered by an OK-650 nuclear reactor, AEU steam turbine, a shaft and a propeller. The Borei Class submarines are the first in Russia to run on the pump jet propulsion system.

Four subs in Russia’s newest class of nuclear powered strategic submarines are presently in different levels of completeness at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk; Yury Dolgoruky, Alexander Nevsky, Vladimir Monomakh and Svyatitel Nikolay. The first-mentioned is undergoing sea tests in the White Sea area.

Svyatitel Nikolay, or St. Nicholas in English - has not been officially laid down, but as BarentsObserver reported, construction was started at Sevmash in December 2009.

This fourth submarine will be somewhat different than the three others, a high ranking military source in told RIA Novosti: -The latest technical solutions will be applied on this submarine, the source said, but denied to give any more details.

Svyatitel Nikolay will have the designation 955U. The three others are 955 and 955A.

In December 2009 Sevmash director Nikolai Kalistratov said that the construction of the Borei-class submarines was halted as a result of the many failed launches of the Bulava misile, which the submarines are designed to carry.

So far, seven out of 13 test launches of the Bulava missile have failed. The test program was interrupted in December, after yet another failed launch of the missile. This time, the people in large areas of Northern Norway became witnesses to the missile exploding in the sky.

Are you under the impression that none of us have a news feed or that a Russian sub
somehow makes a trip to the Mediterranean dangerous?

In the recent past, I would have just posted one sentence and a link or two. With all the complaints from the "stop sign" folks and being told to post all text rather than a couple of citations - because, (as I was told) many readers don't have access to the sites linked, I'm doing my best to comply. This is a very complicated situation with 2 different Admins giving me contradictory info. So please, who is running this forum and whose info am I to follow? Or is this a common paradox?

no doubt en-route to the black sea fleet. anybody know what the Montreux Convention says about this?
