In his new book, The Devil We Know, former CIA operative Robert Baer argues that Iran is an up-and-coming — and often misunderstood — superpower, with strong influences throughout the Middle East.

"The sooner we understand the Iranian paradox — who they are, what they want, how they want to both humble us and work with us — the sooner we'll understand how to come to terms with the new Iranian superpower," writes Baer.

Baer's previous book, See No Evil, was the basis for the George Clooney film Syriana.

Have any of you read this? I am almost finished. Interesting stuff.

Superb, I'll look for it at the airport.

Reviving this.

Just finished the book and found it, four years later, to be somewhat prescient, especially with what's happening in Bahrain, the renewed sanctions on Iran, etc. I would be curious what Baer has to say about the Arab Spring as well. It would seem no one in the Obama regime has read it as their actions seem to be counter to the logical actions Baer says would help ameliorate the Iran problem.

Anyway, a good read and provides an interesting prism through which to look at the current situation in the ME.

i wonder which country presents obama with a larger problem - iran or north korea. flip sides of the same coin.

I heavily recommend Baer's other book(s) as well, especially his semi-autobiographical one. Fear No Evil, I think.

His brother Rupert is no slouch either, this is his no holds barred account of his time with Lady Di.
