there are lots of movies that a lot of people won't think are 'good', but i will watch over and over again. for example, i'm a sucker for a good kung fu flick:

chinese connection
enter the dragon
ip man
older jackie chan stuff (super cop/drunken master era)
shaolin temple
black mask
hero
ong bak

and of course, kung fu hustle.
when they ask how you feeling
you tell em you feeling like something important died screaming
you tell em you feeling like something even more important arrived breathing
something you should probably try feeding

After I posted I went and looked at my DVD collection and thought "Damn, LA confidential why did I forget that? "and then I saw taxi driver and the Bourne trilogy and.....
On the subject of LA confidential have you read any of Ellroy's books? His LA quartet which includes confidential is an excellent treatise of 50s police, crime and corruption, especially of course givig pride of place to Dudley Smith whe saw "violence as a necessary adjunct to law enforcement" . What some call the Smith trilogy are superb - Clandestine, and two from the LA Quartet - LA confidential and The Big Nowhere.

Any doubt about reading them is blown away with the opening paragraph to LA Confidential -

An abandoned auto court in the San Berdoo foothills; Buzz Meeks checked in with ninety-four thousand dollars, eighteen pounds of high-grade heroin, a 10-gauge pump, a .38 special, a .45 automatic and a switchblade he'd bought off a pachuco at the border - right before he spotted the car parked across the line: Mickey Cohen goons in an LAPD unmarked, Tijuana cops standing by to bootjack a piece of his goodies, dump his body in the San Ysidro River.

Hooked from there on in

Thanks, I'll pick the book up for a read. Reminds me of another great crime novel made into a great movie, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, which opens:

Jackie Brown at twenty- six, with no expression on his face, said
that he could get some guns. “I can get your pieces probably by
tomorrow night. I can get you, probably, six pieces. Tomorrow
night. In a week or so, maybe ten days, another dozen. I got a guy
coming in with at least ten of them but I already talk to another
guy about four of them and he’s, you know, expecting them. He’s
got something to do. So, six tomorrow night. Another dozen in a
week.”

Midnight in the Garden of Good and evil
Event Horizon
Starship troopers(of course)
Blade
Contact
Andromeda Strain

I like my classics because they are watchable and they try and give out a message about certain individuals of note without being particularly invasive.

What passes for entertainment these days, seems to resolve mostly around the insanity in my life.I am not someone you want to follow down, especially this particular rabbit hole.

All very good. I don't know how I could have forgotten Shawshank Redemption.
I also dig El Mariachi and I also just watched Terminator 2 again. The best of the series, IMHO. The first was a little too cheaply done and the third was a bit too mainstream.
Raped9Times listed a few good ones. Except I couldn't sit through Starship Troopers once, much less repeatedly. Plus I passionately despise Fast(erer) and Furious(erer).

Late last night I got to watch a movie I had totally forgotten about. Perhaps the best mid 90s action-comedy B movie ever. Hollow Point. Thomas Ian Griffith, Tia Carrere, Donald Sutherland and John Lithgow.

I just remembered one that I want to rent. Blue Thunder with Roy Scheider. It was pretty entertaining when I was a lad.
