Been trying to catch that one for awhile.

For some reason, The Searchers isn't a must-see with me. Almost, and I'm sure I'll watch it again, but I'm not compelled to watch it again as I am with the other movies. It's close.

Also, I was watching episodes of The Rifleman and Have Gun, Will Travel during my last periods of unemployment.

The Rifleman comments on Civil War PTSD (of course, did not say "PTSD") and a lot of the themes look like they were written for the massive number of WWI and WWII vets who would have been watching the show. I watched a marathon session of episodes, and when you see them back to back, you see that Lucas McCain kills a guy almost every episode - usually with his son Mark looking on.

Try this one on for size:

Leone just didn't use traditional filming techniques/shots. Not to mention a great story about men, revenge and the legendary sound effects/timing by Morricone that as far as I'm concerned cant be emulated. And the cast-Perfect.
I was at a Convention here in L.A. recently with some of the best Cinematographers...and this movie came up as being the favorite, but I could be a little biased.

Henry Fonda is such an awesomely evil bastard in that.

I always loved "Duck, you sucker". James Coburn.

"Run man. Run." Tomas Milan.

"The Mercenary." Franco Nero.

"Django" Also Franco Nero.

I guess Welcome to Blood City doesn't count although Jack Palance is pretty damn good in it. Likewise Westworld.

I remember watching something in the same sort of vein as Django a long time ago, but all I recall (apart from that it was quite well-done) was the protagonist would identify himself by whistling this haunting tune... Anyone know the movie?

Some nice editing here:

Yeah, I know it isn't necessarily a Western, and I'll probably catch shit from you old timers, but Way of the Gun always springs to mind during any discussion of Westerns.

All of them.

But particularly, for all you predictable Eastwood sheep, I suggest -

My Darling Clementine
Fort Apache
Rio Bravo
The Westerner
Shane (Has anyone noticed that Pale Rider is a complete rip off of Shane)
Hour of the gun
Last train from Gun Hill
Sgt Rutledge
True Grit (Both versions)
Big Country
The Treasure of Seirra Madre
Tom Horn
Dodge City
Winchester 73
The Man from Laramie
Bend of the River
The Naked Spur
The Far Country
and one for you Canuks and Northlanders - Death Hunt. Bronson hunted by Mountie Lee Marvin in the frozen wastes of the Yukon.

The expert speaks. So what's the whistlin' one I'm thinking of, then? I can still remember the tune but of course that's not much use for googling the movie. It goes, roughly:

D, G, [rest], G, A, G, F, D, E, C, D, [long rest], D, G, [rest], G, A, G, F, D, E, G, D

...Same routine twice with a variation at the end of the repeat. There may be more but that's the only bit that stuck.
