That chapter is well worth reading and the place is well worth visiting followed by a couple of ales in The Standard. Get a 1:25000 map and it's pretty obvious where it happened. Standing in Scotspit Lane at dusk is in my top 10 of good nights out I've had. Most of the locals havent got a clue what they're living next to. The pub (The Standard) is quite shit, well it was 20 years ago and the guy behind the bar thought it was about the french - well it probably was in a roundabout way.
