Daniels, 73, said he feared the injury could end his career. He was working in his garden shed when his left hand slipped and slid into the blade of spinning circular saw.
He drove to a nearby hospital where he was given emergency treatment before being referred to a specialist plastic surgery unit.
"I realised I had done some real damage," he said. "I rammed my hand into the chest of my coat and somehow ran to the car, started it and set off for nearby Henley, three miles away.

"I must have looked a weird sight, doubled over with my face all screwed up from the pain."

As he drove through Henley-on-Thames he was held up by a slow-moving car.

"I jumped out and scared the hell out of the young woman," said Daniels.

"I dived back into my car, mounted the pavement and went around her on the left to get to Townlands Hospital, where I dumped my car in the entrance and staggered through the door.

"My head was full of the pain and the possible thought that it was the end of my magic."

He added that he tried to stay "chipper" as his hand was examined but could hear phrases like "bone is shattered, ground up, nail gone, might be able to save the finger."

He is now recovering at home in Wargrave, Berkshire.

"It's all a bit of a mess," he said. "I've lost the tops of my ring and little finger on my left hand. I may try to get a prosthetic finger.

"However, I feel lucky as the surgeon told me the worst finger to lose was the little finger because it is the one used to grip. Fortunately I've only lost part of it."

His wife and stage act partner, Debbie McGee, was working on her local radio show at the time.

Daniels is due to begin a UK tour on February 22.

"I am already preparing things a bit differently as I don't know what I will be able to feel or what my grip will be like - and I am a magician who is ambidextrous."

He nevertheless plans to return to his shed next week to construct a guillotine for his act. (Something to look forward to)
