It'll be interesting to see if any of the Brits will chime in...or will they maintain their steely discipline of fuck you.

At least England turned in an exciting game today. I was prepared for it to be rather boring like the France - England game.

I can't really disagree w/ your final prediction either. Spain seems on point and the German team has been exciting to watch.

pedro pinto from cnn worldsport has a good breakdown on what he thinks will result. can't say i disagree. will be watching to see if what he says about england and france, in particular, happens.

I'll bet against that final result prediction.
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Looks like that prediction is on course...

Spain v Portugal - 1 - 0

Germany v Italy - 2 - 0

Looking really good so far. Nicely done.

I think Italy's chances against Germany fall under 'Well, stranger things have happened.'

Very true. They tend to play up or down to the level of who they're going against (though they definitely played a higher level against England and just couldn't finish it during regular play). I don't like complementing the Italian team as I loathe them only a little less than the Portuguese but you can't beat the Pirlo's sprezzatura with that pentalty kick.

Spain - Portugal...well, I just want the Spaniards to beat the crap out of them and to see Cristiano Ronaldo cry.

Spain were lucky to win yesterday's Iberian Dirt Diving Championship.

They appeared to be the better team, but sometimes it's difficult to score if you don't take any shots on goal. Their strategy seemed to be: get the ball deep into Portuguese territory, pass, pass, pass, pass, hesitate to pull the trigger about three times, then give it away.

Pretty much. There's a balance b/w possession and control and taking the risk and pulling the trigger. I think on Grantland or elsewhere it was pointed out that there were more yellow cards given than shots on goal. Pretty pathetic. The ref in that game was bad as well. Howard Webb wouldn't have let them get away w/ some of that crap. Hopefully he'll be the main ref in the final.

Germany - Italy should be more exciting. Only an hr to go...

After watching England vs. Italy and Spain vs. Portugal - both of which (as you know) were scoreless for 120 minutes and went to PKs - I'm ready to see someone score a freakin' goal.

Hopefully Germany puts on a show, as I don't think Italy will.

10 minutes until game time.

Spain 2 Italy 1 (extra time)

I would like that score but feel it might end up being something like Italy 1 - 0, esp. given the last game Spain played. Then again, they have an extra day to prepare. Will be a defensive struggle but I think some Italian flourishes/risks will carry them through, unfortunately.

I'll be happy for the Italians if they win.
