New York: The CBS television network has apologised for breaking into its popular prime-time drama CSI: NY for a special report on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's death, blaming an "overly aggressive" producer.

The report cut off the ending of the popular forensics drama, prompting a flood of viewer complaints.

The network said the episode would be repeated the next day.

The report came just five minutes before local news broadcasts in the East and Midwest.

ABC and NBC waited until the local news to break the story; in the West, NBC ran a "crawl" with the news at the bottom of the screen.

"An overly aggressive CBS News producer jumped the gun with a report that should have been offered to local stations for their late news," the network said in a statement. "We sincerely regret the error."

CBS News spokeswoman Sandy Genelius declined to identify the producer or say whether the person faced disciplinary action.

I read the article this morning, and while I was watching CSI at the time I thought it was appropriate to stop the show and mention that Arafat had died. It was a historic event, and one that will have serious effects in the middle east. I guess it shows you were your average joe's priorities are. World afairs are somewhere below taking the garbage out.

Horrible!

Postby SRR » Fri Nov 12, 2004 3:34 pm

This is terrible!!! Absolutely Horrible!!! Al-Qaeda has inflicted a wound worse than death on Americans this time - they shall pay!!!

I mean, destroying billions in real estate and killing a few thousand executives in that liberal wasteland called NYC is one thing, but cutting off 5 minutes of the nation's most popular TV drama just to mention that some fishhead with a towel on top bought the big one hits America at the core.... The Very Core!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But people were already aware of his deteriorating
health and news of his death was not exactly a
shock of the hugest variety. As he was, yes: dead,
reporting the news of it five minutes later i.e. after
CSI ended, probably would have saved them viewer
backlash.

Priorties? Priorities?? Yes we all have
priorities. Including the networks. The average Joe
couldnt influence his countries influence in the Middle
East if a million of 'em banged their pots on their
porches in the middle of the night to protest Arafats
death.

Watching TV is a lifestyle choice and gives
people a "break" from the barrage of 5 minute sound
and visual bytes of car bombings and beheadings.

Its important to have a place that insulates you from
that remote reality but yes over time should not make
you apathetic or indifferent. Still, waiting 5 minutes would
have guaranteed viewer satisfaction as they invested
90 percent already and were told they would have to
invest either another 190 percent tommorow OR block
off 10 percent from tommorows regularily scheduled
programming just because CBS perhaps wanted to
be the first on the block to "break" the story.

And all because a man with deteriorating health
passed away. In this case, I dont think time was
a huge imperative.

The dream would be that the Palestinian leader would die and it wouldn't mean shit to us either way, because we are not involved with them.

For a piddly country of 4 million that sucks cash like a drunk uncle , Isreal / Palestine get way to much friggen attention in the world, and I have to say I thoroughly support folks being Pissed off that CSI got cut.

If people wanna watch the news they can watch CNN.

It was CSI.
That's what the show is all about.
Just imaginary ones.
When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? To surrender dreams - -this may be madness; to seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness! But maddest of all - -to see life as it is and not as it should be.

A good friend of mine was on CSI last year. He played a corpse.

He was upset when the cops discussing his case over the corpse for 2 minutes was cut, so he only appeared in the opening scene.

We could see up his nostrils.

Yes but still, what they did was interstitial.

The average joe is what keeps the station alive. Not flash style news reporting.

Its not like ppl are numbed and somewhat apathetic already after getting their daily dose of real world violence (which is seldom ever recorded...all we typically 'see' are the after effects) on the 6 o'clock suppertime news boradcasts. Are they?

---

Since we know average joes dont come to the flag (ok im one)

that just leaves us, or if you like: you guys

In this world theres no them and theres no us. Theres the Smiths and then theres the Grabowski's.

Also relationships between stations and viewers has always been
fluid.

Harumph, it's not like Afghanistan.

I like the idea about priorities though. Gives me more than just pause for thought.

ASk anyone even moderately successful about keys and secrets to success and they will probably at least grin and tell you : it helps.

Have good weekend.

Yeah, I just got into watching CSI since I have been sick and I was super pissed about it being cut.

Who the FUCK is this guy Al Kyeda anyways and what the HELL did he do again?
Passion is necessity. It is not diligence, or simply being committed to a goal. Passion consumes you while you chase down your goal. Passion should always be your natural state of mind for it is what sparks momentum and sets the pace.
