Film: Tears Of The Sun

I got the film for my birthday. It was pretty good. Has anyone seen it?

Navy SEAL Lieutenant A.K. Waters and his elite squadron of tactical specialists are forced to choose between their duty and their humanity, between following orders by ignoring the conflict that surrounds them, or finding the courage to follow their conscience and protect a group of innocent refugees. When the democratic government of Nigeria collapses and the country is taken over by a ruthless military dictator, Waters, a fiercely loyal and hardened veteran is dispatched on a routine mission to retrieve a Doctors Without Borders physician, Dr. Lena Kendricks. Dr. Kendricks, an American citizen by marriage, is tending to the victims of the ongoing civil war at a Catholic mission in a remote village. When Waters arrives, however, Dr. Kendricks refuses to leave unless he promises to help deliver the villagers to political asylum at the nearby border. If they are left behind, they will be at the mercy of the enormous rebel army. Waters is under strict orders from his commanding officer Captain Bill Rhodes to remain disengaged from the conflict. But as he and his men witness the brutality of the rebels first-hand, they are won over to Dr. Kendricks' cause and place their lives at risk by agreeing to escort the villagers on a perilous trek through the dense jungle. As they move through the countryside on foot, Waters' team, experts at evasion and concealment, are inexplicably and ferociously pursued by an army of rebels. They are confounded until they discover that, among the refugees, is the sole survivor of the country's previous ruling family, whom the rebels have been ordered to eliminate at all costs. Waters and his small band of soldiers must weigh the life of one man against their own and the refugees they feel obliged to protect.

Well it was fun. According to a lot of AR15.com guys, most likely Spec Ops themselves. They had a lot of fun discussing how the Aimpoints were on backwards, the CO was always outside of the command deck, and during the big showdown the SEAL Team bravely stood in front of this really big tree.

But the arfcommers also said that it painted a realisitic portrait of the attrocities commited in Africa on a regular basis.

All you can really look for in these types of films is some fun.

A few scenes for sure had me scratching my head.

What was good though, like you were saying, is that it painted a fairly accurate picture of what goes on in Africa all too often.

I thought it was good for much of the film, rather dark and atmospheric, but it got silly towards the end. Having Eammon Walker (Oz) in a significant role was also good.

The only thing I can tell you is it was shot mostly in Hawaia but you may have already known that or noticed this from the credits at the end.

Why is it I can never seem to remember how to spell hawaaiaa? Does anyone have a system for remembering?

I remember feeling all sort of gung ho about it when it came out

then feeling sort of let down.

Kinda thought to myself: what was I thinking?

once the mind expands, it never returns to its
original proportions.

It had a lot of potential but never really went anywhere. A let down but better than most of the crap that's out there.

Hey, did I just hear something about Bruce Willis suing the film company because of some trouble with a special effect that injured him? Maybe a squib?

Hey, as long as Monica Belucci is in it, it can' be too bad. Check out "Milena" kinda took me back to my childhood days and the platonic and ofcourse one-sided romances with older women at the time.

Tears etc: typical Willis movie. Not my cup of tea. Does anyone know if he made good on his offer to those US soldiers about paying a million dollars out oif his own money if they would capture Saddam? Probably not, all talk and no play like so many movie-tough guys...

Yeah it was filmed here on the island of Oahu and I believe portions of it were filmed on Kauai also...oh and you spell Hawaii<<<-----that way.

I also was glad Eammon Walker had a decent role...I tend to like him as an actor.
Passion is necessity. It is not diligence, or simply being committed to a goal. Passion consumes you while you chase down your goal. Passion should always be your natural state of mind for it is what sparks momentum and sets the pace.

to me it seemed like it was always halfway between trying to be a pure exciting blow-em up action movie and taking itself seriously by showing something profound. it failed on both counts.
when they ask how you feeling
you tell em you feeling like something important died screaming
you tell em you feeling like something even more important arrived breathing
something you should probably try feeding

Something tells me they didn't hire Capt. Dye.

In Haiti I heard a real funny story about how Bruce WIllis blamed Union workers as the reason why Hudson Hawk sucked and was so expensive. He did it on tv in an interview. The guy i was hanging out with worked on the film and said they woulld hang around for 12 hours while everone decided what to do , then they would work for 2 hours, so the Union guys would get 6 hours overtime pay a day due to shitty planning.

But in retaliation for the interview, when Bruce Willis's car was discovered in a lot it ended up completly encrusted with boogers.

I saw Tears of the Sun in Bogota, Colombia - it was subtitled in Spanish and the audience kept laughing at some of the translations because most of the subtitles are done in Mexico and they used Mexican slang which apparently Colombians find amusing. My knowledge of Spanish at the time did not allow me to appreciate these nuances....

I liked the film overall...
