I've got Nightwish's "once" it's an awesome album. There are so few interesting female singers in metal - most just ape the men.

I do the local "80's night" from time to time, get blizted and listen to Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and Sisters of Mercy.... whoooooo . Hard to be retro about the 80's when you were in Ninja Turtles sweatpants when they ended...

I haven't had much time these days to play my own music, but I listen to the radio, mostly for news from the BBC-anyway the music the station plays is really eclectic: for example the DJ may play Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven follwed by, (UGH!) the Carpenters, followed by Otis Reading, followed by the artist that sings the tune Me & You & a dog named Boo, followed by ABBA doing Dancing Queen, followed by Queen doing We Will Rock You, followed by John Travolota crooning some song song from Grease, followed by the Rolling Stones doing Start Me Up, and finishing up with Dolly Parton...

Maybe now you folks get the picture-And this is really the only decent radio station in BKK

All over S.E. Asia the most popular American song is, from Bali to Burma....Hotel California, everytime I hear it I want to shoot my radio

Courtney Love "America's sweetheart"

Green Day "American idiot"

Moosehead - Bolt Thrower's "For Victory" is an excellent album.
Svizzerams - A female metalhead fencer? Are you a unicorn? Anyway, if you like Nightwish, you might like After Forever's "Decipher."

CDs currently on heavy rotation in my POV (by genre):

Doom metal:
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Skepticism - Lead and Aether

Swedish death metal:
In Flames - Whoracle

German goth-pop:
Behind the Scenes - Homeless
Wolfsheim - Casting Shadows

Quintessential 80's club tracks from my ninja-turtles-hammer-pants-and-skateboards days:
Depeche Mode - Violator, Music for the Masses

Progressive art-metal:
Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane

Post-doom alt-rock that is always in my truck:
Anathema - Judgement, A Fine Day to Exit

OK, at first I just thought that Skiritai liked to dress up in Roman leather skirts and play tetsudo with his buddies. But after seeing his vast knowledge of gothicentric cuts I'm growing well...pretty fucking terrified.

Skiritai, do us all a huge favor and stay away from the nuclear trigger. Nietzsche, unlike your pagan God, is dead.

Moose, at this exact second I'm lissenin to a cut from Dennis Brown.

My top rotation at the moment would be:

Jimmy Solanke
Juanita Rodgers
Snatch and the Poontangs
Kutmasta Kurt
Paul Desmond
Coleman Hawkins
Rondo Brothers
Rachid Taha
Idris Muhammad
Kanda Bongo Man
Bang Gang
The Divine Comedy
The Fatales
The Stranglers
The Russian Futurists
The Ikettes
The Presets
Fleetwood Mac -- Need Your Love So Bad

I WANT what Jimbo's having and I want some chic to call me JOE!
- - -- - --- - -- - ---- -

My tastes of what Im listening to are far too normal and un-eclectic
and un-esoteric to warrant mentioning.

I like everything from Abba 2 U2, ZZ Top to Blondie..Olivia Newton
John practically owns my heart. Def Lepard, old INXS, AC/DC now and then cant hurt. I run the gambit..

I am proud to say I am probably the only BFC'er here genuinely
and literally still stuck in the eighteez.

I figure that if you are young
and impressionable and listen a lot to adults singing lyrically about their impressions and views and ideas about love....it takes a lot of growng
up to finally figure out what it is they were singing about.

As when you are young you are just now old enough to
understand. The eighties in terms of the music it produced were an apology for the disco movement
of the 70's. A lot of the ballads from the 70's are good though. ez listenin'...

man, you guys must really be depressed and angry to be listening to all that goth and death metal shit... "frustrated-white-man" music is what i call it..

although, i do like jello biafra.. horrible singer but great mind. Joy Division is high art... but the whole 'damn life sucks' genre went downhill after that.

albums i listen to the most these days:

Ozomatli (self-titled) featuring Cut Chemist
Cannonball Adderly's Somethin' Else
The Best of Arabian Dhebkah
anything from Sergio Mendes during the 60's
John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
The best of Sarah Vaughn
Wu-Tang- 36 chambers
2 Skinny J's- Volumizer
Pharaoh Sanders- Karma
all of the Panjabi MC albums
Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers- Ugetzu
John Coltrane- My Favorite Things (i play this every morning-- it's like -----------------God telling me "don't worry, everything's going to be alright")
Ilham Al Madfa-Baghdad
Bob Marley- Songs of Freedom (all 4 disks)

you people need to cheer the fuck up. ;-)

What's with all this sub genre stuff anyway??

It's simple it either rocks has a good beat, good lyrics or they don't. I'll admit most of the people in the bands I listen to are around my age but at least most of them are still alive or I've seen them in concert, or have met and worked with them at some point, or they still produce new stuff.

Nothing wrong with listening to old stuff but as with any art it's nice to get to something new and fresh.

I should have also added Paul Westerbergs new record "Folker".

The question as I interperted it was "What were you currently listening to?"

I have like 200Cd's and over 250 records from like the 70' 80's 90's and I'll pull the stuff out and listen to it occasionally. But really I just cannot bring myself to constantly playing old Return to forever albums or Mahavishnu Orch or even Minutemen, Husker Du, Janes Addiction, Porno for Pyros, Ethnic music etc etc over and over again.

I guess I just bore easy.

There's plenty of CD's in a few different CD racks. Different music for different moods.

Been meaning to get Disclaimer 2, by Seether. And also a CD by Nusrat Ali Khan.

Your generation's musical options were severely limited by the expense of producing albums at the time. Not just anyone could make a record. You had to get signed to a major label, release a radio hit, and tour to promote your music.

Today, couple the widespread availablility of home recording equipment with the rise of the Internet and you have a musical spectrum that is no longer dictated by major record companies and the lowest common denominator listener. Thus, literally hundreds of unique sub-genres have developed worldwide with conventions that are so clearly defined that it isn't logical to classify them as one general style.

You wouldn't put Bach in the same boat as Shostakovich, would you? They're both "Classical" in the most generic sense, but that's where the similarity ends.

Grimace, Venturi - I suppose everyone who listens to reggae drinks ginger beer between bong rips, and everyone who listens to rap kills cops and sells crack, right? I get it! Every country fan beats his wife in a drunken rage after losing his job and squandering his savings in Vegas, then runs her over with his 4x4, every Classic Rock listener freaks in the purple haze with flying hippos, and every Classical fan is a boring old white Presbyterian.

Come on.

Why do people always make these ridiculous assumptions based on what music people listen to? Your assessment of me sounds like something straight out of some Bible tract about the "evils of music."

I listen to extreme metal because I am a lifelong multi-musician and there is no other genre that consistently offers such complex songwriting. If you are not a musician you probably cannot appreciate how difficult it is to play, nor would you recognize how much closer the scales and song structures are to Classical music than Rock. Progressive groups like Mahavishnu Orchestra have nothing on many of the bands I listen to.

That having been said, I'm off to bathe in the blood of Christian babies. In Nomine Satanae!
