Yesterday whilst cleaning my apartment I had BKK's finest radio station blaring, the DJ was playing the kind of stuff Mach would groove to...Olivia Newton John singing Let's Get Physical, Sammy Davis Jr. singing The Candy Man, The Partrage(sp?) Family, Billy Joel, Hellen Ready signing I Am Woman! I finally lost it when the DJ played the song, Love Me Love My Dog. I grabbed the first music CD I could find, which turned out to be Hot Rats by Frank Zappa, a decent departure from BKK's airwaves....

Passion is necessity. It is not diligence, or simply being committed to a goal. Passion consumes you while you chase down your goal. Passion should always be your natural state of mind for it is what sparks momentum and sets the pace.

here's a contribution to the list - a top twelve spins of the last month - no order:

~Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician / Hairway To Steven (www.buttholesurfers.com)

~Sun Ra - Interstellar Low Ways

~Low - Secret Name (www.chairkickers.com)

~Molasses - Trilogie (www.alien8.com)

~ T Rex - The Slider (ya jus' gotta know Bowie stole all his gold from Marc Bolan)

~Swearing At Motorists - Number Seven Uptown (www.secretlycanadian.com)

~The Byrds - Sweetheart of the Rodeo

~Dirty Three - S/T (www.touchandgo.cm)

~Les Savy Fav - s/t

~Bastro - Sing the Troubled Beast

~Velvet Underground - Peel Slowly And See (Boxed Set, Disc 1-outakes)

~Trans Am - Surrender to The Night

bonus 5:

~The Cure - 3 Imaginary Boys rerelease (deluxe edition w/ extra trax/demos) (wwwthecure.com) - nice collection!!

~Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments / Ozma (www.melvins.com) - so syrup heavy I ctry when I hear it.

~Jesus Lizard/Scratch Acid - anything

~Mule - s/t (1/4 Stick)

~Black Mountaintops (formerly Jerk With a Bomb) - Black Mountaintops (www.scratchrecords.com)

and another one because I said so - I guess that makes 17. hmm:

~The Flaming Lips - In a Priest Driven Ambulance / Transmissions From The Satellite Heart (www.theflaminglips.com)

all are very disparate sounding bands - but I have a feeling people on this here board would, uh, "dig 'em, man"

Post Script: if Cream does a reunion tour to North Amerika, I would 100% go and see it - I love The Cream - Jack Bruce (sorely underrated and consumate songwriter of that group) and Ginger Baker - not to mention Eric Clapton's best work - save for one song on the Blind Faith rekkid and some stuff w/ the Yardbirds - then he went all "adult contempo" on us all.

Obscure additions:

Engine Kid - awesome group - C/Z records, 1991
Atomic 61 - Heatworm - Box Dog Records 1991

Hola Black Flaggers,

Heres what I'm listening to today:

Swans -Greed/Holy Money
The Residents -Commercial album
Mercyful Fate -9
King Diamond -The Graveyard
Slayer -South of Heaven
Birthday Party -Greatest Hits

Ahhh, its good to be back. I started a new job, and had not the time to be in the BFC, but I was involved in a freak auto accident a few days ago, so I'll be spending some good, quality time here again while I recuperate. Maybe I'll start a new topic...

Sun Ra died a few years ago, but some of the members still play together under the name.

I had a couple of opportunites to see Sun Ra in concert, which I did not take advantage of unfortunately. I've given up on BKK radio, except for BBC news-so it's back to CDs & MP3s-some current tunes I'm listening to...

Bitches Brew-Miles Davis
Discipline-King Crimson
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Yo Yo Ma
Exile on Main Street-Stones
X-More Fun in the New World
Keith Jarrett
The Ramones
James Brown
Lou Reed/Velvet Underground
Charles Mingus
Robert Johnson-Complete Recordings

I'd like to get some music from the 5,6,7,8's-but I can't find any of their CDs in BKK...unfortunately

I just downloaded a couple of nighwish songs (purely trial basis only, I swear) - WOW!
It's Rammstein meets Loreena McKennit - I've got to get some albums, great recommendation.

Today at work I have my iPod on shuffle...I have about 6300 songs on mine - so it is everything from Gypsy Kings to Basia to Sibelius. I highly recommend getting speakers for the iPod.

Music - my drug of choice. Caffeine runs a close second.

peoples - just got a pile of new records to review and there is this band called Black Mountain from Vancouver/Victoria...

lazily described, it's like Black Heart Procession with Blue Cheer meets old Neil Young, the Band, and early Trans Am, and Can - with VU for good measure.

- 4 of the 5 members work on the frontlines of the lovely Vancouver mental health battle (ie: crystal and smack) - but this is one freaking beautiful record.

other members played in Radio Berlin, Blood Meridian, Jerk With a Bomb/Gus/Seed. please trust me - you'll love this thing.

Scratch Records released it.

The alter ego of this band - Pink Mountaintops - is also amazing.

Truly a topper.

re: Sun Ra - Jon Szwed's 'Space Is the Place' is a great read on the man from Birmingham, Alabama...

finally - on another books and music note: Mike Ruffino from the sadly defunct but genius Unband (TVT Records) has written a book about their tenure and road tours with Dio, Nashville Pussy, Def Leppard, etc. - it's called 'Gentlemanly Response'. It's a must read.

A good excuse to pull out some minimal compositions:

John Zorn's Redbird, as I mentioned

John Wall's Alterstill, one of the most astounding tape-splicing compositions ever created(inspired by Max Ernst)

Benard Gunter's collaboration with Ralf Wehowsky - 3 mini-CDs with three 20 minute pieces each.

The compilation "Night Passage: De-mixed", you'd never know what Bernard Gunter was up to unless you have seriously good subwoofers

Brian Lustmord's collaboration with Robert Rich, "Stalker", that stands out as one of the best minimal/ambient albums of all time

Just to mix it up a little, Frank Bretschneider's album Curve - some of the most innovative music from the minimal techno scene

And to finish it all off, the composition by Morton Feldman in honour of Philip Guston. Not a piece for the impatient - At four hours, eight minutes, and sixteen seconds(as performed by the California EAR unit). Four CDs. And this is one of Morton Feldman's 'shorter' compositions from his later life.

That's a good day of music.
