Ah, but that would be a one-off and unsustainable. By chartering the boat (which is not mine, by the way), Mr Penta can keep feeding people year after year. And actually, he prefers not to donate for food handouts, except in disaster emergencies, but instead for water, sustainable local technologies, education, and so on. :)

People always say that about American charitable donations, but I've never been able to find the statistics to prove it (though I have no reason to doubt it). And then the figures would need to be weighted to take account of 1) the average per capita income in the different countries surveyed; and the facts that 2) so many domestic services which are provided as of right in other western countries depend solely or largely on charity in the US (and disgracefully, increasingly in the UK); and 3) other western taxpayers, through their governments, give far more in international aid than the US. I would also want to exclude donations to churches and other religious organisations just for the churches themselves and the extravagant lifestyles of some of their "pastors", but that's a personal view. If you know of any such international comparisons, I'd be grateful if you could link it/them.

Well, um, sure, it would be great if everyone gave up drugs and alcohol. But I just don't understand why you are you always harping on Penta about it. Is she the only person on the board who drinks alcohol or smokes cigarettes? Nope. Being a social democrat doesn't forbid anyone from doing those things, well, unless you're underage. Islam does - why not pick on the board Muslims about it? It just seems a bit pointless to be telling one person to clean up their vices, but no one else. Especially since the reason you're picking on them has nothing to do with those vices - it has to do with differing politics.

OK, yes, by selling the boat, and giving all the money to charity, sure, she could feed a bunch of people (although the boat still exists - it's not magically transmuted into food, duh). But you can say that about anyone on the board! Even me, and I'm probably the poorest one here - I could sell my computer and my camera, and feed a bunch of people, too. But I'm not a Christian, I don't have to give up all my belongings! I'm a socialist, which means I work hard and pay taxes. And besides, you aren't poor - I know you've got possessions you could sell, too, ROB, how many people could you feed if you sold them all?
