Where do you draw the line?

Postby Lethal Dose » Tue Mar 18, 2014 1:28 pm

Young people of today have a different outlook on the world than their parents and grandparents. Things that were once considered immoral are now thought of as acceptable. Children are having sex at younger ages, and in many schools kids are fighting each other in fight clubs as an informal extracurricular activity after school, experimenting with random designer drugs, and watching ultra-hardcore pornography on the Internet. The common language of todays youth has become reduced to George Carlin's "Seven words you can't say on TV" It's even to the point where some parents are including themselves in their children's delinquent behavior and encouraging it. Things were very different when I was a teen, and when my parents were teens. Cheating in school and yes, in post secondary, has become epidemic, so we're quickly entering a world where the person who designed the bridge you're driving over or inspecting the mall roof you're walking under, or is about to prescribe medication to someone you care about, has likely cheated their way into their job title. Now of course, I'm not here to judge. Judging stupid or immoral behavior is no longer acceptable in today's society. In fact, it's getting to be the only thing that still isn't.

What I am wondering is, where do you personally draw the line?
Do you still have a "line"? If so, how will you react when the next generation or the one after cross it? (Way way over it)
Should society attempt to reinforce what shreds of moral structure remain before they too are lost to time? And if so, how? Or should we simply remove what few barriers are left to people doing whatever they want?

... Discuss.
Why? Cuz I said so, that's why!

Are you asking about me and mine? Or society in general? And you are assuming some sort of universal societal mores when we have moved to a point of multi-culti-relative antagonism.

We are devolving...

Bring on the poo throwing monkeys..

That is the nature of each generation to the one before.
Things that were once considered immoral are now thought of as acceptable.

no
what we consider immoral also changes from generation to generation and from society to society.
Children are having sex at younger ages

no
historically that's not the case at all.
in many schools kids are fighting each other in fight clubs as an informal extracurricular activity after school

kids fight just as all of the various species that exist on our Earth do in the fullness of their youth.
experimenting with random designer drugs,

how else should you do drugs?
experimentation is far superior to blind random sampling
watching ultra-hardcore pornography on the Internet.

yeah, because nobody saw pornography before the internet

The common language of todays youth has become reduced to George Carlin's "Seven words you can't say on TV"

Obviously the words were already in the common vernacular, hence the proscription on television and the comedic genius with
which The Prophet Carlin elicited humour from them.
It's even to the point where some parents are including themselves in their children's delinquent behavior and encouraging it.

why is using old Anglo-Saxon words delinquent but using words like shmuck, putz, poo, pee, weewee, bottom or the like is deemed acceptable?
maybe you should look at your prejudice
Things were very different when I was a teen, and when my parents were teens

In my day we had to blah, blah memory lane, blah blah cool story Bro.
Cheating in school and yes, in post secondary, has become epidemic

where is your proof of this?
everyone of your statements so far have been groundless conjectures
so we're quickly entering a world where the person who designed the bridge you're driving over or inspecting the mall roof you're walking under, or is about to prescribe medication to someone you care about, has likely cheated their way into their job title.

nonsense
there are more checks and balances for those situations then there have ever been
so much so that when it does happen it makes front page news
Now of course, I'm not here to judge.

Excellent because you seem to have none of the qualifications
Judging stupid or immoral behavior is no longer acceptable in today's society.

I take it you haven't heard of reality TV
In fact, it's getting to be the only thing that still isn't.

more nonsense
the media, politicians, pundits and paid experts do it all the time everywhere
What I am wondering is, where do you personally draw the line?

I don't
I exist in an ever changing now
each moment of itself with it's own rules, written or not
Do you still have a "line"?

lines are for movie theatres and picking up women
If so, how will you react when the next generation or the one after cross it?

Our time is everybodies time, we are all of us existing at the same time
Should society attempt to reinforce what shreds of moral structure remain before they too are lost to time?

...and whose morality should that be? mine or yours?
And if so, how? Or should we simply remove what few barriers are left to people doing whatever they want?

rules are for those who choose to abide by them
man's law disenfranchises the powerful in favour of the weak
a complete person has no need of them

... Discuss.

I would but I'm not paid to be here and contribute, this is entirely voluntary
I know the law. And I have spent my entire life in its flagrant disregard.

"where is your proof of this?

Not so at all. The proof is just a Google search away. I reserve the right to be lazy because I already know the truth. Those that need proof, the burden of proof is upon them. It's not hard to find.

... But just to simplify my underlying question, is there anything at all that you find to be immoral? I somehow doubt you'd say so if there was, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

For those that have been living in a cave the past 20 years, here's a bit of background.

Faking the Grade
Hook'em while they're young.
Not Concerning Numbers, let them play.
Coming soon to Pay-Per-View!

Living in a free-for-all, no-holds barred society may seem like paradise to some, and a living nightmare to others.

@coldharvest
"It's even to the point where some parents are including themselves in their children's delinquent behavior and encouraging it." - The example I had in mind was hosting underage drinking parties for their kids and their kids friends (although there are other examples). I guess that missing "." really threw you. My bad.

If you are a "go with the flow" kinda person who believes that morality is just an outdated concept, let me run a few things by you that may very gradually become the norm.

1> Legalization of ALL recreational substances.
2> Lowering age of sexual consent to the single digits.
3> Pedophilia & Child Pornography (Naturally follows 2)
4> Bestiality
5> Hardcore porn on regular daytime television
6> Promotion of "alternative" sexual behavior to young children in public schools.
7> Public Nudity (Show your "pride" all the time)
8> Public Sexuality (Make sure to wipe that bench before sitting on it)
9> Public Fist Fighting (Take ten paces, turn, and tackle)
10> Cannibalism (It's only absurd until it isn't)

I know Coldharvest will feel right at home when these sorts of things start becoming the new normal, but what about the rest of you? Will you resist "progress"?
Why? Cuz I said so, that's why!
