Diving in Vietnam

Postby coldfire100 » Thu Mar 05, 2009 1:50 am

Hi Boys and Girls:

I'm leaving for a month for Vietnam in April. Has anybody been diving out
there? I'm starting in HCM city and ending up in Hanoi. I've heard Nha Trang is supposed
to be good. I would like to dive in Halong Bay if that's possible. Any suggestions as far
as where to dive and any dive outfits that you would recommend would be greatly appreciated.

Also any travel advice you could give. I'm fortunate enough to be going with my friend
who is Vietnamese but I'll be on my own for a week while he tries to find some of his long lost
family.

Thanks in advance.

Dude. give your head a shake, Sean Flynn is dead, he was killed in Cambodia along with his pal Dana Stone

Hue City is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't suggest diving in the river-

Rent a motorbike, they are cheap, manueverable, and you can fit them on most of the boats that navigate any rivers you come across. Dont forget to get some clear and tinted googles - I drove a motorbike over half of Cambodia and at night the clear googles keep the insects from blinding you, same for the tinted googles and the sun during the day. Learn from my mistakes (no googles).

I'd really like some feedback if anyone knows as well. i got some friends who will be going to vietnam in august to dive that place as well. they are trying to get me to go along, but besides my lack of enthusiasm for travelling to vietnam, i'm not too sure how good the dive sites are, and if the dive centers are reputable...

If Nam is anything like Indonesia and Thailand skip driving unless you have a pocket full of cash – if you get in an accident it is your fault, PERIOD! Also expect the local cops to constantly target you for “inspections” between 2AM and 6AM

Just hire a local driver and save yourself the BS

Diving. Not driving.

I don't remember seeing any dive shops when I was there, but that was several years ago. My guess is that Halong Bay would have some good dive sites. I will tell you though that I was under impressed by the beaches in Vietnam. The beaches in Indonesia and Thailand are much better. I know that doesn't always correlate to better diving, but it might help you.

Watch out for Redneck Asian dynamite fishermen.

Dynamite fishermen accidentally kill diver
by EVAN T. ALLARD @ CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network

PHU CU, Vietnam (24 Mar 2009) — Police arrested four fishermen who accidentally killed a diver with explosives.

Police officials in the Phu Cu District in the central province of Binh Dinh told CDNN the Coast Guard heard an explosion and caught the fishermen who tried to escape.

The fishermen told police they saw bubbles and movement under the surface and thought it was a large fish.

One of the fishermen tossed dynamite into the water and after it exploded the group jumped into the water but instead of finding a fish, they found the body of the dead diver.

Dynamite fishing, which severely damages coral reefs, is illegal in Vietnam but a common practice.

Nguyen Ngoc Liem, head of the Phu Cu District police department, said the fishermen would be charged with killing the diver and destroying aquatic resources with the illegal use of explosives.
