JW Blue is for people who don't know any better. There are tons of other great scotch whiskies on the market. If your budget is $100, you have huge range to chose from.

I was just suggesting JW Blue cuz it was a gift and JW Blue has the 'WOW! JW Blue! Thanks Son!" factor cuz it is a commonly known brand of pricy scotch (like Dom Perignon having the WOW champagne factor despite it not really being that better than some 20 dollar sparkling wines)

If I was giving a Scotch booze gift with a 100 dollar budget I would just give someone 5 bottles of JW Red - it seems more practical

Anyway, the "wow" factor only figures in if the recipient doesn't know anything about scotch. If this Scottish-American is proud of his heritage, and knows a thing or two about good scotch whiskey, which I suspect he does, a gift of JW Blue will more likely have him thinking "gosh, that was nice if him, but what a shame he wasted all that money, when he could have bought me something really good".

I think I'll sample a few bottles before selecting the worthwhile one. With this fellow it is more the thought that counts. I remember enjoying some food with him after a long day with him, myself, an immigrant dude, and a guy who's father used to work with him, a few others, and then he got got all teary-eyed with a smile on his face saying 'fuck, I never thought I would be sitting here with people like you in this industry'.

EDIT: where did silver spoon come from? Maybe I should put the bottle in an overpriced wooden box complete with a silver shot glass.

No, their not mutually exclusive. I was just making the point that rather than using mommy & daddy's money to buy expensive booze, I actually earn the privilege of drinking the good stuff.

You know you're an alcoholic when your friend gives you 5 bottles of whisky as your birthday present.
