Once I pegged my preference for certain regional styles of Scotch whiskey (and that would be the Highlands & Speyside), I was happy drinking any single malts available from the dozens of distilleries. I don't even remember the names of most of them. Sample a few at a St. Andrews on W 46th St, and try to remember the name (which I can never seem to do).

I don't care for Lafroaig or Lagavulin. Too smoky.

I'm suspicious of people who are afraid of a little variety in their food and drink.

I did a quick online search and I am guessing that Macallan 30 will cost $SHITLOAD over there.

The prices for it here range from $1100 a bottle down to about $600

Yep. Depending on the exchange rate a "cheap" one would be $500 to $600.

Now I am curious...If I bought a beater car, lets say a Geo Metro on Craigslist...I wonder how long I could drive it before its expenses equaled a bottle of MaCallan 30 yo?

Mr P had a rich boss who liked to splash his money around conspicuously. Perhaps, to be charitable (because I liked him), he just didn't want to look cheap. Whenever we went out to eat, he'd order the most expensive wine on the menu. And though I like a good wine and was grateful for the opportunity to try some very pricey ones, I could never fully appreciate the difference between a good bottle and one at several multiples of the price. They could be very special, yes, but five, ten times better? Not to me. Obviously, as a smoker, my palate is never going to be that discerning, but I do wonder sometimes how many people's palates are. I cannot fathom why many people would want to spend $600 or more on a single bottle of single malt. But then I probably am cheap. ;)
