Adventurous Job/Internship for a College Student

Postby shouston321 » Mon Feb 22, 2010 6:10 pm

I am a criminal justice major with one year left at my university in Chicago. I am looking for an interesting job or internship this summer. I would like the job to be able to cover the expenses of the summer and leave me with a few grand in my pocket for the school year. I am probably going to join the Marine Corps after I graduate. I would ultimately like to get into private security work, work with the State Department, or similar work abroad. I would like the job/experience to help me further theses goals. I would like the job to be abroad but if you have any ideas for a job stateside I would be open to consider them.

Good luck with that part. What kind of job experience do you have?

I attended military high school and Military College. I am used to Spartan conditions and have basic military skills. I have experience in leading and instructing cadets and tutoring foreign cadets in ESL. I have traveled fairly extensively for someone my age. Beyond that I am basically unskilled.

What kind of internships does your college advise?

That is usually where you get intern information. If you are taking a stab in the dark and hoping for an internship to be available from people on this website I have to tell you that you would be wise to assume it is a very slim chance that there is one. Even more doubtful would be one where you "had a few grand in your pocket".

Check with your college. Be prepard to have diddly/squat in your pocket afterwards (but if you are used to harsh conditions that should not be a problem, should it?)

Check all the alphabet agencies, including State. My monkey ass got an internship with them back in the day, and you sound quite a bit more qualified. Google organizations like ASIS, The Steele Foundation, etc, etc. Tons of risk management firms out there that may have internships. And if all else fails, come to Iraq and I will pay you a G to clean and pack all my shit this summer.

Sounds to me like you are trying to waste your education.

Kurt, this was indeed a stab in the dark and hope for the best. My school has a decent internship program but all of the internships are local. If I can find a place to intern abroad on my own the school is pretty flexible. Having money in my pocket is always nice, but the experience is much more valuable to me.

As for using school resources I am currently setting up a study abroad for next semester. I am looking at going to South Africa, Vietnam, or Thailand.

Intern local then.

You can use local experience to work abroad. Most people do not want to work over-seas and companies love young dudes willing to go overseas and work hard.

Intern in a local finance or engineering firm and use that experience to work overseas.

What programs does your school offer? I can give you a better answer if I know what some options are.
