Tattooing In Afghanistan

Postby Hitoru » Tue Jul 06, 2010 2:22 pm

I have a good friend who is an accomplished tattoo artist who has expressed a keen interest in going to Kabul and tattooing soldiers and the like. He has been told there are Filipino artists doing lousy work and he wants to know how he could get set up on, or near a base.

He used to plant trees with me and has since traveled around the world quite a bit after his years of riding rail cars across the U.S. And Canada. DP's don't faze him much.

So, does anyone here know how he could get hooked up with some sort of a concession ?

AAFES is not going to give out on-base tattooing concessions, as DOD policy is oriented towards discouraging tattoos. Your friend will have to do it off-base, or clandestinely.

Thanks for the response.

I didn't think AAFES would let him set up shop . Would there be expat business located near a base he could possibly rent a space ?

Yeah, I've never seen an on-base tattooing concession in Iraq, and I'm sure there is a demand. The military would shoot it down just because of the mission degradation issue (wearing LBE is painful if abrading a new tattoo, I guess).

The other issue is that most of Islam regards tattoos as haram.

It would be cool, but probably a huge target once word got out. Tattooing is haram, and it's a place where you're guaranteed to find GI's.

Fuckin hippy :) But really, he could probably set up shop on Chicken st. or in a hotel room. He would have to hang out where mill types chill and try spreading the word by talkin to tattood army dudes.

Yeah, we doused ourselves in patchouli and wore sandals while tree trucking.

So, it could feasible for him to set up shop for a period of time. I told him to keep his beard growing.

True but I've seen Paks and Afghan with them.
Probably not much of a problem on heavily patrolled places like Chicken Street
The Mustafa Hotel has room at the back that you could rent as well and they're well up for being unusual
get some heavies and give'em free Islamic tattoos....ya know crescents and shit
the Shahada in Arabic script always looks nice

I'd work with a tattooist in Kabul....sounds like a super-cool gig.

Most guys who tattoo on base do it on the down low, they are always contractors who ink on the side, they make a fortune doing it (combat pay/high paid contractors + tattoo artist + boredom = tattoo artist makes bank) – the flip tattoo guys I have seen do a pretty good job (but I have never seen them do anything complicated).

His bets bet is getting a gig as a contractor or hooking up with a contractor who lives off base and crashing/setting up shop with them
