Inmarsat BGAN Explorer 300

Postby Penta » Fri Sep 17, 2010 9:12 am

Has anyone used this satellite set-up on the high seas? Mr Penta is sailing the Atlantic later this year and is considering hiring it.

Shes never interfered with me. I have no complaints about her.
Same here.
Mega ditto.
I met her once and I found her to be a nice lady. Not kookey in any way.
Penta has always been gracious, kind and very sane in all my interactions with her.

The BGAN hardware cost is not what you need to worry about ($900 to $2500 USD), but the $4.50/MB data transfer rates. 1MB is not a lot of data these days.

If you can live with text-only email, staying offline and transferring email once a day, it's actually much more economical to use Iridium.

Thanks, thewalrus. I'll pass it on. He's talking about hiring, not buying the kit, and wouldn't be too fussed about the cost over the 2 or 3 weeks he'll be at sea. Just to be able to keep in touch, via e-mail, without inconveniencing the boat's owner and his existing satellite set-up (or spending too much on the latter). More concerned about reliability, I think.
