Layer Cake, about $14 usually at the store, fits this profile and is great. Other malbecs I like are Gascon (usually $10) and Casillero del Diablo (though I buy the caminere as well) which you can get super cheap at Trader Joe's.

I usually just have a glass or two w/ dinner so I don't need anything fancy. Lately, the grocery store had a special on Beringer cab sauvignon that comes out to about $6/btl.

I don't know shit about wines but have tried to experiment and keep track of ones I consistently like and that don't break the bank. I'm not pimp enough yet to bathe in Veuve Cliquot nightly like RYP.

Just look at the labels. I've taste tested people double blind. Most people don't know the difference between Potters and Absolute besides the label.

Potato vodkas tend to be oilier than that corn alcohol.

One might notice that many households keep a fifth of hooch in their + kit

Here is my simple wine advice.

A boxed white for fish and for cooking (keeps in the fridge, does not go rancid fast)

A Malbec for real meat.

A washington state ice wine for dessert.

Sandeman's Port for cocktails or for people who hate ice wine. ($12 to $15 and tastes like a $25 bottle of port IMO)

Stick with this (or find your own likes) until you are invited to a dinner party, then blow $40 to $60 on a good red to give to the host. (make sure it can be googled as a good wine)

That way you save money and don't look like a cheapskate.

James: a serious reply to your post from a serious winaholic: the best stuff is in the fifty to eighty dollar range.
A modest daily allowance for wine is about 12-15 bucks. But my being threatened w having to go to work in the alaskan bush, ive been recommended this: Bota Box wine. It comes in a recycled cardboard box and can be shipped.anywhere. Ive tried it. For future work purposes. my favorites are the malbec and pinot noir.
What was the question, again? :)
No Apologies.

Buckfast is serious wine. Don't knock it till you have knocked it back.
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.
