...it is hard to find "good" cheap wine, because there are a ton of labels out there. and by cheap i mean something in the $8-12 range. i have found great everyday drinking wines under $8 but you gotta be an experience quaffer to find them. myself, i like italian wines; i don't like sweet stuff at all and italians tend to be too dry for the average US wino. my cheap italian pick is antinori "santa cristina"; which can usually be had at good supermarkets that sell wines.

lots of peeps like yellowtail; depends on the grape...some are more harsh than others. i think most of the low end CA reds are harsh; you definitely can get destroyed on them but it ain't gonna be a delightful experience. the south american reds are a better bet and usually a better value. most low end whites taste the same; you want to play it safe buy a chard, pinot gris, riesling/gurz, savy blanc...

save any sutter home wine for cooking only...

Stateside, it's hit-or-miss with Charles Shaw from Trader Joe's. A lot of their products of good quality, but the wine can a mid-shelf surprise or turpentine. So far, that's the cheapest I could recommend. It's provided for some lovely times in the BFC chat room.

It's hot as fuck these days, and I'm back to my refreshing summertime standby: vinho verde. Most decent wine shops will have white or two, and maybe a rose. They are normally lower in alcohol content than regular wine, and are ever so slightly effervescent. I don't think I have ever seen a bottle of this stuff over $10.

Ah, I wish one could find it over here. My folks spent a lot of time in Portugal in the '70s and on their return must have accounted for half of the vinho verde imported to the UK, lovely stuff for the summer.

Chateau Ste. Michelle makes Gewurtraminer & Riesling that are bargains for the value. Also Hawk's Crest Cabernet Sauvignon or Acacia Pinot Noir.

Cheers!

My favorite local winery is Rombauer. Not that I've done comprehensive sampling, though. Usually about $30/750ml. My favorite used to be their Merlot but I just tried the Zinfandel and liked it more.
