Mole Crabs: Tastey Bait

Postby Kurt » Mon Jul 09, 2012 2:43 pm

My girlfriend, friend and I decided to go clam hunting on Long Island this weekend. Neither of us have ever hunted clams before (we were told it mostly involved digging until you hit clams). Anyway, we could not really find any clams but I noticed as the waves receded their appeared to be airholes in the sand that bubbled so I got my trowel and dug and came up with these bug like arthropods flapping around in the sand, and these turned out to be Mole Crabs or Sand Fleas.

I quickly collected about 30 of them and then kept them on ice until I got home. I popped them in a frying pan (don't use a lot of oil or they will explode all over the place) and waited until they turned red like shrimp and then popped them in my mouth....they were delicious ...tasting like a cross between shrimp and crab. The girlfriend put olive brine on them and it made them taste even better.

If we would not have spent time hunting for "real" food we could have easily had enough mole crabs for a small dinner party.

Cool!

Here's a website that even discusses the notion:

True, but these things filter the plankton and stuff (which may be gross) off of the surf so they eat relatively low on the food chain, and since some parts of the ocean seem to be a storage container for mercury I do not think I digested too much grody.

After our gathering trip the GF had Lobster Paella and we both found that the Mole crabs had a better flavor (but I am not a big fan of lobster)

i used to dig for these at Coney Island, when i'd get really high and bored at staring at fat women in skinny bikinis. never thought about eating them tho considering the shit in the water. the water is full of garbage, diapers & "coney island whitefish" (used condoms). i recently went to Coney Island and observed quite a few condoms & one big fat puerto rican shaving his pubes by the water. i wouldn't eat those mole crabs if you paid me a bazillion dollars.

Neither would I. Though I doubt filter feeders convert pubes into human useable nutrition I would totally get the willies thinking about it.
