A STRANGE WORLD HAS JUST GOT A BIT STRANGER

It's life, Jim, but not as we know it. Westcountry investigators of UFOs and the paranormal believe there are things out there that we can barely comprehend. And now they want us to know about it. According to David Phillips of the Torbay Investigators of the Paranormal it could even be that UFO sightings are the result of the Earth's energy "helping to reveal something to us that is really there". That something could even be a force from our future that is travelling back in time with a message for us.

This may sound bizarre to many people, but for others it makes sense. So many people are fixated by UFOs (unidentified flying objects) that when you type the word via Google it produces no fewer than 874,986 results.

Despite the myriad theories, the Ministry of Defence believes it has the definitive answers. And it revealed them this week in a report that was previously "Secret - UK Eyes Only".

That study has thrown the global industry in UFO theories into a lather with rational explanations for the supposedly inexplicable.

Such is the impact of its findings that one leading UFO site ( www.ufos-aliens.co.uk) instantly posted a riposte headlined "Is MoD's UFO explanation full of hot air?"

The report examines UFO sightings collated over a 30-year period to see whether there is any evidence of a threat to the UK and to identify any potential military technologies of interest. It concludes: "The study was not conducted to substantiate the existence of extraterrestrial life-forms but we can confirm that no such evidence was found."

The report says that while people reporting sightings are often genuine, these experiences can often be explained by aircraft lights or natural phenomena, such as meteors forming "buoyant plasmas". The study, Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK Air Defence Region, was conducted between 1996 and 2000 during a policy review into the handling of UFO sighting reports by the MoD.

It adds: "There is no evidence that 'solid' objects exist which could cause a collision hazard. Evidence suggests that meteors and their well-known effects and, possibly, some other less-known effects are responsible for some unidentified aerial phenomena.

"Considerable evidence exists to support the thesis that the events are almost certainly attributable to physical, electrical and magnetic phenomena in the atmosphere, mesosphere and ionosphere. They appear to originate due to more than one set of weather and electrically charged conditions, and are observed so infrequently as to make them unique to the majority of observers."

People who claim to have had a "close encounter" are often difficult to persuade that they did not see what they thought they saw.

That's rubbish, according to David Phillips: "The authorities always want to pooh-pooh these things. A lot of people have ghost sightings or experiences with UFOs and these are not deluded people. These things appear as solid. They are not bits of plasma."

Yet the MoD's report could hardly have come at a worse time for those who believe in what others find unbelievable.

The belief that there is "something out there" was delivered a sizeable blow recently when John Humphreys, creator of Max Headroom, a 1980s TV cyber-presenter, said he was one of the hoaxers behind the infamous Roswell film, the grainy black and white footage supposedly showing a dead alien being dissected by US government scientists.

Rather than being shot in 1947 near Roswell in the New Mexico desert as claimed, the film was actually made at a flat in London in 1995. Mr Humphreys' confession, 11 years after the Roswell footage was first shown, has punctured one of the world's most contentious but widely believed conspiracy theories.

Mr Phillips, however, believes that the MoD report is typical of the its approach to overwhelming evidence of the existence of UFOs. That includes numerous incidents in the Westcountry. His group, which has been operating for ten years, regularly investigates reports of hauntings or UFO sightings that confound conventional analysis.

"One of our members had a sighting in which a craft took off and then shot across the field. It even interacted with the security lights of a house. The MoD is trying to suggest that people are hallucinating," he said.

What then are they - aliens? "I like to think there are other life forms but I don't know why an alien would be so concerned about what is happening here, unless they are from our future and unless they are flying machines, or what we will evolve into and have come to warn us about our planet.

"It may be that the energy from the Earth is helping us to see something that is really there. If these UFOs are born of light from the Earth then it may be that the Earth is sending us a warning that it is a sentient being."

All very well, but if something from our future is trying to warn us of our present, why single out random individuals? Mr Phillips believes that the MoD report provides the answer: those in authority do not pay attention so it is a waste of time contacting them.

Furthermore, visitations and sightings are far more frequent than most believe. "Now and again I meet people who have had an experience of a haunting or a UFO and they say they don't want to talk about it because they'd be thought of as mad. But we're not imagining things, even if it would suit the powers-that-be to depict us that way. It's as if they are studying these things but are not letting on what is happening."

That would be a conspiracy against those who accuse the authorities of a conspiracy. The answer must be out there somewhere.

The world would be a much cleaner place if blind people used brooms instead of canes
