Detroit man arraigned after allegedly trying to resurrect father

Detroit — A mental examination will likely be ordered for a Detroit man arraigned Friday on charges he stole his father's corpse in hopes of resurrecting him through prayer, his attorney said.

Vincent Bright, 48, is charged with disinterment of a dead body on allegations he took the body of 92-year-old Clarence Street on Monday from the Gethsemane Cemetery on Gratiot. The body was inside a casket in a mausoleum, authorities said. Bright faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the felony charge.

Bright's court-appointed attorney, Gerald J. Karafa, said Friday he plans to speak with his client in jail and contact members of Bright's family to determine if he has any history of mental health issues. Karafa added there's a "pretty good chance" a mental evaluation will be ordered for Bright when he returns to court on Jan. 24.

"It's an unusual case," Karafa told reporters outside the courthouse Friday. "It's not something you see every day."

Detroit police say Street's body was recovered Tuesday inside a freezer in the basement of Bright's two-story home in the 4600 block of Eastlawn, which was barricaded with two-by-four wooden boards.

The missing coffin was found inside a white van at a Citgo gas station about a mile away.

A 49-year-old man — who was taken into custody along with Bright during the investigation — was not charged because of insufficient evidence, said Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy.

Magistrate Millicent D. Sherman of Detroit's 36th District Court set bond at $75,000 for the habitual offender.

Wayne County Court records say Bright has a 1993 charge for unlawful use of a license plate. He pleaded guilty to the charge in 1994. A second count of forgery was dismissed, records say.
