Given that wormholes do exist within our terrestrial boundaries and that the gates of Damascus were manufactured specifically to transport travellers between Jerusalem and Damascus this uproar around Damascus is a regional oscillation of the interdimensional properties of the route from Jerusalem to Damascus.
To harness such a potent method of transportation will take decades of efforts and improvements in our scientific knowledge but also ensuring security of the site. Thus and therefore conflict has occured to secure the region that the Damascus gate leads to in anticipation of its trans-dimensional travelling properties. Decades from now we may be subject to a media whirlwind as specific "select" teams delve deeper below Damascus to discover this interdimensional transportational method (if indeed we are notified of its use at all); at such an event, it is hoped by individuals within the Illuminati, that access to its use can be consistently secured for extended periods of time (no less than centuries).
The potential economic impact is debatable at this point however in the future moving goods and individuals to the interstellar colonies already populated by Illuminati faithful will become more critical as their projects here on Earth stabilize or come to an end. Nonetheless while the desire to "bomb" Syria regurgitates itself in fits and starts from various present-time nation states, subconciously the true Illuminatus understand the essence of the situation, and ensuring that such casualties are used to create an atmosphere of instability whereaswhich such subterranean work can occur, often contracted out to subsidiaries of American firms doing business from Libya or Iran however not necessarily so; what we must remember is that as this gate becomes more apparent, and the areas around Damascus become more open to "rebuilding" per se, the sooner the Illuminatus will tire of this planet and move to the next. What that means for "human" civilization as a whole is anyone's guess; we can only hope it doesn't delay the next production season of Arrested Development. Those were truly dark years.
