Poll: Do you ever avoid clicking on NSA-unfriendly links?

Exploration of Conspiracy Theories from Perspective of Esoteric Traditions

Do you ever not click on something because you don't want the NSA's attention?

All the time. I don't even like to stop scrolling when I see an interesting online tidbit, lest they think I'm curious.

Only things like "How to build a biological weapon" or kiddie porn, but why would I click on that stuff anyway?

No, I click on whatever I want, but sometimes I think it's probably a bad idea.

Poll: Do you ever avoid clicking on NSA-unfriendly links?

Postby friendlyskies » Sat Oct 04, 2014 9:51 pm

So, today I scrolled past a link that appeared to access some kind of ISIS/radical Islam recruitment site. I was curious about it, because I'd love to see how they lured emo youth into laying down their lives in Syria. I decided not to do so, however, because I suppose it would ping something deep in the bowels of the NSA supercomputer and add yet another asterisks to my patriot profile.

But, I tend to be paranoid.

So I was wondering, does anyone else avoid potentially controversial websites? Or is it just me?

No because I am free baby
I know the law. And I have spent my entire life in its flagrant disregard.

Links? Are you worried about getting placed on a no-fly list? Otherwise there probably isn't an issue. Frankly all the NSA big data work seems to be a boondoggle.

Well, OK, I'd rather be paranoid than correct on this particular issue. My understanding of the data collection is that it forms aggregate profiles from lots of sources - your university records, your money cards (alcoholics might get a ping, for example, or people heavily in debt), your search history, that sort of thing. And if you hit a certain level of nonconformity, you'll go on a list somewhere as a potential unfriendly. For me, you know, college communist with ties to Nicaragua, I'd be profiled as "someone likely to attend an #Occupy protest with an iPhone." Throw in a bunch of bomb-building sites and a couple of ISIS recruitment centers, however, and suddenly I'm "someone to keep an eye on."

That just seems like a bad idea. But yeah, if I'm just being paranoid….
