Modern, internet-age rubbish. (I'm joking. Some of the old Soviet maps that have been scanned and put online for free are fantastic.)

But seriously, before the age of books is over: get a copy of the Times Comprehensive Atlas. The old, 20th century editions whose maps almost look like they were hand-drawn and -coloured. Impressive, exciting and simply beautiful. This atlas is to self-respecting travellers what an AK-47 is to any self-respecting rebel. Only problem is you have to keep it on your bookshelf and can't take it with you anywhere: it's as big as a table.

Do you imagine that many of the posters don't have Atlases?
The best one I've got is the Historical Atlas by William R. Shepherd
now that is a hand drawn atlas and beautiful as well.

The scanned Soviet maps are from the website of the library of the University of California/Berkeley. I downloaded the whole Tajikistan collection a few years ago. I have just looked up the old link, but it does no longer work. The overview of the map sheets is still available, though at another URL:

The same libray also had similar maps of Central Asia and the Caucasus.

not quite maps.....but still

Weird, Kampuchea existed from '75-'79 (khmer rouge), and Dahomey ceased to exist in '75 (became Benin). Animaniacs didn't start running until the '90s...where do you find a map that old?

Edit: wow I'm a dork.

Animaniacs are the dogs bollocks. I applaud your taste, Coldharvest.
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.
