survival knife

Postby Dark11Crusader » Mon Jun 02, 2008 2:26 pm

So I just got back from a trip, and some idiot (aka me) didn't think we'd have any need for a hatchet, so I ended up having to chop up decent sized logs with my knife, a Sheffield 8 in bowie from wwII. In the process 2 things happened: one, I found the handle to be very short and not substantial at all in my big hands, making work like that very difficult. Two, my younger brother was fooling around and snapped about an inch and a half off of the tip.

So I need a sturdy, substantial, and good quality knife. Not for everyday use, but to carry more as a "get my ass out of trouble" tool in the backcountry. I've been looking to get a new one for some time, though I didn't know the drawbacks of the one I was using until I actually had to use it to get myself out of some bad situations. What do yall recommend or what do you perhaps use yourself?

THanks

For what you are talking about the Holeb Bushman is a good choice

http://www.holeboutdoors.com/Camp_Tools_Details.htm

I have one, it is a workhorse of a chopper – highly recommended. And get the leather sheath, not the canvas one. I used it the last time I went camping in Indonesia and it was really handy.

Check out http://www.knifetests.com/, if you got the cash id go for a Fallkniven, there top notch. Otherwise maybe a Gerber LMF II, its got a sharpener built in to the sheath that would probly be worth 50 bucks alone. Iv got one and its held up brilliant.

Take a chunk of hardened spring steel, sharpen half of it up real good and wrap the other half with duct tape, then 550 cord, then duct tape and you will have all the knife you will ever need and if you have the tools, it won't cost you more than 20 bucks.

It won't look like much, but it will cut lesser knives in half with one stroke.

Now, as far as purchasing something...In my opinion, there's only two kinds of "survival knives" that are seriously practical in any places you might need to survive:

1. Multi-tool, top quality (Leatherman Charge Ti is my daily carry - and I use it just about every day for something, too. ).
2. Machete, 18" blade, top quality (Tramontina, etc.).

Others may be practical, just not AS practical as these two.
Life is short. Eat, Drink & Be Merry!

Thanks for the advice. After looking around, comparing a lot of reviews and features, and thoroughly outlining what exactly I needed out of this knife, I decided to pick up the LMF II. The price was unbeatable, and I've heard nothing but rave opinions (save a lot of people not liking the grip texture durability). But I think it fits precisely what id be using it for.

I like Gerber knives allot (I have like 30 of em) but the tips tend to break under heavy use, and they are not true full tang knives

If you are looking for a full tang, belt carry, medium sized outdoor knife then I would HIGHLY< HIGHLY< HIGHLY!!! Suggest a CRKT M60 SOTFB – That is my dally carry in Iraq and I take it with me anytime I am outdoors.

But if you really want a knife/safety knife combo then get the CRKT-McGowan MAK-1 w/ Safety Knife Combo

But seriously – I would not suggest a gerber as an outdoor knife

That’s the M-16 or M-21 folding knife – the M-60 is a fixed blade
