Converse desert boots

Postby Mikethehack » Fri Jun 13, 2008 5:49 pm

Having tried all the others (love some, hate some), I was thinking of trying out Converse Desert Tacticals.
Any opinions? Hard facts/ advice?

Red wings have a number of different models of boot. The state foresters I used to work with swore by them and bought a pair with their annual state perk every year. I bought a pair of Red wing #2218 (at least I think that's the number), I could not get used to the giant heel nor how little of the ground I could feel in those boots. I could probably punt a badger 50 yards in them, but eventually I gave them away to another forester after only having worn them a few times. The heels would catch on branches which was no good. Heavy suckers too.

I would say I have at least a dozen pairs of boots. 2 pairs of Danners, a pair of Chinese made Cabela's black full leather duty boots I use for motorcycling, A couple pair of EMS sewn-down vibram lug hikers, rocky snake boots, Canada made rubber insul. boots, some Montrail hikers and a few others...Usually I don't buy cheapos, but recently I came upon a 24 hour sale that was buy one pair get the next for $1. The best boots the store had were Bates enforcers with a side zip, so I bought two pairs for $80. After having pounded some decent amount of ground with each pair, I would recommend these without hesitation. They are super light and the comfort is fairly good. The only addition I would add to them would be drain holes as the zipper comes down far enough to let water in, but there is nothing to let it out. They do not let sand in and I have not had any problems with the grains getting stuck in the zippers, so I would say they would probably work well for sandy and/or dusty environs.

I've never had a pair of converse boots, but my wife has at least one pair of high tops in full black leather which are very cool looking shoes/boots. Some of these athletic foot shoe companies can make very impressive high speed boots and others fall apart in 2-3 months. Good luck.

They're good boots - get the 6" ones, I especially like the side zips, just like the crepe-soled booties my old Grannie used to wear. Should cost you £59 or so.

Cheers

Where can you buy them in the UK?

The Converse desert boots , Ive not had a pair.Ive owned a couple of pair of the Israeli desert boots and find that the rubber soles tend to fall apart on rocks. Which is surprising as they were made for the Army for hostile environments. For desert boots get you some Courteney Boot Company boots. I suggest the Selous boots. They are game hide of Africa (where they are manufactured) and a higher price, but they are some great boots. Probably would not work well in the jungle at all, but they are great kit for everything from city to the desert. Ive gotten different pairs of Courteney Boots soaked and they dry looking like new. Go to their website and see what they can take in the African bush.

My Converse are now falling apart, the soles are near worn through. Yet my desert foxes are going strong and are a year older.

The older U.S. desert boots are about as comfortable as you want to get. Any boot with a plastic liner or foam padding is going to be a hot skankbox in a few days. The soles are "fungible" but the tops are cool.

Assuming of course you are going to wear them in the desert of course...

My first pair lasted about 8 months of hard use, 14 hours a day/7 days a week before the soles seperated from the uppers. I bought another pair and used them last week on a 12 mile hike wearing a 40# pack and they did fine. Not the perfect boot by any means, but not bad at all for $85.00 either. Probably best used as intended, in a desert climate.

I wore them in Iraq for my last 6 months there, they were pretty comfortable, if I ever had the need for combat type boots again Converse would probably be my first pick. Don’t know about long term usage, I always change my boot out every year (and I gave that pair away when I left).

One thing fo sho - after using boots with side zips I will never go back to lace up boots again.

Also: I love to tell anti-war granola eaters that Converse is a military contractor and war profiteer

I don’t like Converse. 5. 11 make a pretty good boot and so does Oakley.
Truth hurts. Maybe not as much as jumping on a bicycle with a seat missing, but it hurts...
