Postby lightstalker » Mon Aug 11, 2008 8:28 pm

Im trying to get a copy of vista or XP for my Mac to run with bootcamp.

Can I copy the OS straight from a PC?.A friend of mine recently brought a new PC laptop but It didnt come with a copy of vista.WTF?.

Does anyone know of where I can rip off a copy of Vista or XP?.

Keep in mind that both vista and XP phone home to the mothership quite often, which can trip up any.... creatively acquired licenses you may be running. Therefore, third party firewalls are critical. I do know Ebay sells xp and vista for dirt cheap as long as you buy a piece of hardware with it (OEM or sumpin' like that).

Not sure why you need xp on your mac, however. That's sort of like buying a ferrari and puncturing all the tires and then trying to drive somewhere. But anyways.

Proof that moving to America fucks you up.

You will need to purchase a copy of Windows XP or Vista, or crack a copy (illegal). Currently XP is not packaged on new PCs for sale. However a simple OEM copy can be purchased on line (I recommend newegg) for a decent price (for a piece of microsoft software). OEM copies carry no technical support so if you purchase either have a descent idea of what you are doing, or know someone else who does.

I roll with OpenSuSE 11 on my main machine. If I need to use Windows I have access to XP. Vista came with a new machine and lasted for a couple of weeks before I wiped the disk clean and installed XP.
It had too many incompatibilities and annoyances with my older software and peripherals.

If you’re going to buy XP off ebay or whatever, make sure SP2 is included on the installation disk. Bootcamp needs SP2 and it needs to be on the same disks unless you plan on slipstreaming.

If your pc has over 3gb of ram, avoid XP since it can only utilize 3.2gb’s max.

I’ve just put together a system using 64bit Vista. Since SP1, Vista is WAAAY more stable. The OEM (orig. equipment manufacturer) version is available to the public at about 50% less than retail. MS say that the OEM license is good for only the original hardware but if you have an IMAC, that isn’t a problem.

Vista blows chunks even for dweeby people who use PCs. So not only do you get a crap copy of the copy of the copy of Mac system you get all kind of wierd short bus big brother stuff going on as they constantly fuck with your computer (remember you are only borrowing Microsofts' Vista) by updating, checking and doing lengthy updates, capturing your info and generally acting like your mom going through your drawers for porn.

Oh and viruses...you will get the clap. The world spends an inordinate amount of time coming up with ways to load all kind of crap on your computer and you end up having to run a variety of time consuming and silly programs to check for viruses.

There is nothing on Vista that you can't do on a MAC if you need to run those dull programs better to get XP or older systems.
