Where are you going hiking? - because that's going to make the difference.

If it's 90% of places mostly upland, well I would say have a hard look at what Danner, LaSportiva, Montrail and Asolo have to offer in a versatile hiker. I'm sure there are other quality mfgrs. out there, but those are what have worked the best for me.

I would look for something with a stitch-down or otherwise replaceable sole and heavy leather upper (preferably non-gore tex lined, even though Danners come standard that way and aren't horrible).

Of course for special environments you will have to change shoes [desert, water (ven. snake swamps, coastal, open sea, jungle), sub zero/high mountain alpine conditions are all areas that really require specialized footwear].

My favorite hiking boots aren't boots. I use approach shoes or running shoes. I've never had problems with my ankles, though, so you might want something with more support.

yeah, there are so many good choices about these days. what are you going to use them for?

just make sure they fit. ill fitting boots aren't worth a damn.

I've been happy with my Vasques, but I'm not too hard on hiking boots.

I'm looking at a pair of Merrel Radius for myself. My current pair have just died this last weekend.

Any thoughts on those?

Have served me well in jungle, desert and woodland environments. Feel like I'm wearing go fasters.

I have a set of Salomon hiking shoes that have mesh uppers so they're extremely light and water friendly, but they don't cover the ankles if that's a problem for you.
I can't remember the name, though. I don't go for the classic heavy leather hiking boot and sandals end up acting like shovels on sand.

Q,

I've been eying those Cons up a bit, but how are they in comparison to a regular hiking boot in warm weather (Since you mentioned jungle)? I hate freakin hot weather, do they breathe well, or is just like a leather oven on each foot?

They are 100's of times better than cadillacs or any heavy type leather boot. Maybe not as cool as jungle boots, but the trade off is they are extremely light, don't get wet too easily, and dry damn quick when they do get wet.

I'm actually pretty shocked. I bought them after alot of debate, expecting them to be a mistake. They've served me more than well.

I bought the converse last month, I worn them for thirty days straight. I really like them, they are super light weight and comfortable. But I do have to say they do get wet easily, 30 minutes in the morning dew and my socks are wet.
I now have been wearing them sockless since I have been working daily in a swamp. They do dry out relatively fast if the humidity is low.

I'm waiting for Santa to bring me another pair of Danners.
