What tools do you carry when traveling?

Postby Kojak » Tue Dec 09, 2008 11:46 am

I'm revising what I carry for tools when I travel. My work is often in 3rd world countries so I can't go to the local DIY for a spanner when I need one.

Here is what I'm currently carrying:
Leatherman Wave but going to buy a Leatherman Surge when home next time with the bit set
Small cresent wrench
Small, multi-bit screwdriver for fixing things like glasses, etc.
CRTK folding fighter
Pelican Saber Light
Roll of duct tape
Heavy thread with needles
Extra flashlight
Paracord

What does everyone else carry?

Thanks,
Randal

What tools do you carry when traveling?

My wits. Without them, everything else is useless.
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.

I just ask people like the guy above if I can use his stuff -- then I don't have to carry as much. I usually have a cell phone and pocketknife, but I don't feel naked without the knife.

I love it when you're in a room full of people and say, "Anyone have a knife?" and then whoever does goes into a mad rush to be the first to pull it out of their pocket and give it to you, as if all the years they've been carrying it around and hardly using it are justified by the fact that you need one now, and they were able to meet the need.

A Leatherman Charge Ti (which I use almost every day, Mr. Redharen - and am often loaning to guys like you... :-)...)
A bandanna.
A Micro photon light
My keys.
My wallet.
Adequate clothing/water/shelter/etc. + backpack and/or luggage for the trip conditions.

Occasionally, A cell phone (not a smart one).
Occasionally, A pocket pack containing:
25' of 550 cord.
2 square feet of h.d. aluminum foil
A bic lighter
A ferrocerium rod called the "blast match" (which in a drunken state will not light half green oak leaves ablaze).
A small ziplock with some drier lint in it.
An assortment of fish hooks.

I've also been known to carry quite a nice small arms arsenal while traveling as well.
Life is short. Eat, Drink & Be Merry!

A credit card, a phone and an index finger to point at the offending problem.

Ha ha...ha ha ha ha...ha ha...OK, I don't even know what that is. But if I were near you, I'd borrow it. :)

When I go backpacking or something, it's different, but I'm not going to list all that crap. When I get back to the hostel or whatever, I lock that stuff up and take my phone, card, passport, a few bucks, etc. -- nothing clever or ingenious except, of course, my rapist wit. D'oh, I mean rapier.

It really depends on where you're going and what sort of worst case scenario you could find yourself in.
Ya know how to use a compass? Wouldn't hurt to take one. But then again if you're going suburban and you're always going to be around people then a compass may just be extra un-needed baggage.
As long as you got your wits with ya you should be right with choosing what you will need to take.
Just imagine the worst case scenario that you 'could' find yourself in and prepare for that in moderation.

My basics:
pen and paper
Tactical knife
practical Survival knife
rope or good string
Good clothing and a tarp (depends on weather where you're going)
I think i'll stop there, i could keep going but all that gear is for me and for where i am going, not where you're going.

Pretty much what Mike said, with your wits you'll figure the rest out
