I think gerber has a bad rap for being brittle compared to the Kershaws etc, but i have 2 gerbers and am very happy with them both. One is an every day assisted folder i've had for a few years; great knife. The other is the LMF knife that is also very effective for camping, etc.

I have never used these types with the gut hook to field dress game. For $30 i would go for it.

30 bucks means that you are buying a knife that costs 10 bucks to make. That sez plenty about the quality of steel and manufacturer. Even if it has a well known brand name. But if you actually use it and it keeps an edge..go for it.

I've been kinda interested in the none gut hook version.

Some early online reviews have been fairly positive of the Metolius line.

I have snapped the tip off of every Gerber I have ever owned

I do have a few Gerber’s just for my knife collection, but I would never use one in an environment where I had to rely on my knife

If you want great quality and reasonable prices go for CKRT – I have used them in every possible hard use environment on the planet and they have always stood up. CRKT are the best sub-100$ production knife I have ever used hands down.

I had a gift card for Amazon last week, that gave me enough extra to order a Gerber Metolius folder for $18.00. Should be here in a few days.

You seriously have to stop using them like crowbars or stop leaving the keys in there. ;-)

i know you said you weren't getting the gut hook version, but let me know how it turns out. i'm torn between the metolius and the kuskokwin.

Finally got my Metolius and had time to give it a quick test.

The handle is really well done, comfortable and the non-slip texture works great. Solid lock up and the blade would shave out of the box. At first, it didn't open really smoothly, but with use got better. It's definitely not a "flip" open knife.

It's a beefy folder, here it is next to a Buck 110 for size.

I had some tree branches in back of the house from a recent storm, so used one to test with.

I then drove the tip into the branch and twisted and pried around with it for a few minutes, with no damage.

After some time hacking and carving the branch, even I was surprised it would still shave, because I have not always been impressed with Gerber knives and their edge holding. (They compare the Chinese steel in these to 154CM)

Overall, I like this knife, I was not happy with Gerber for marking the box with "made in China", but nowhere one the knife does it say "China", which may be questionable????

Wow, there's taking one for the team...it would have been a bummer if in the course of testing the knife you'd busted the point off in that branch...glad it held up OK.
