Why you should buy Pelican cases

Because they'll survive when your land cruiser is blown up:

Because they come in a lot of colours:

Because you can ship stuff in them directly:

Yep, Pelican cases are bad-ass – I used to pack fragile electronics in Pelican cases then toss em into the back of a Hummer, never had anything break

Not true at all. Pelicans shatter at low temps when dropped, the o ring seal always goes missing, they make freeze dried food taste like crap and they slide all over the place adding far too much weight for their benefit. Thankfully they fixed the snaps which destroyed many a thumbnail. When I worked with CNN or on some of my TV shoots it was like moving small houses.

Nothing says STEAL ME like a flotilla of stickered pelicans being checked in.

I prefer heavy clear vinyl kayak bags inside traditional luggage or duffels.

I've never had the O-ring seal fall out of one...

Large numbers of Pelicans covered in stickers in a hotel do scream "International news media!" but that's nothing compared to the weird transit cases a 1.2 meter flyaway ku-band uplink packs into. Gigasat, a UK maker, uses carbon fiber hexagonal shaped boxes that have a cosmetic carbon fiber overlay on their surfaces.

Pelicans do add a lot of weight but it's in a different category from soft sided luggage or backpacks. Generally any competing high protection hardshell case of the same size will weight about as much as a Pelican, such as 9.6 kg for model 1620:

My favourite is still my 1495 laptop case which will hold two macbook pro laptops, a satellite phone, plug adapters, chargers, pens, paperwork, a GPS, a compass with a little bit of room to spare.

I don’t know anything about using them in extreme cold environments, but like I said they held up well and protected fragile electronic gear under rough conditions when I used them.

But cuz they are made of plastic it only makes sense that the cold may make them fragile

"I've never had the O-ring seal fall out of one... "

then you need to abuse them more :)))

I like those mini Pelicans that can hold a small fart or sumpin...

Image

In my experience...which is limited to severe abuse... Pelicans are actually less functional than those Nazi aluminum boxes and in tropical enviornments actually cook your gear, pushing the moisture deep inside your sensitve gear. They are great for dust and if you have Pelican wallahs ideal for tossing in the back of trucks. I used to have a custom Anvil set up that fit perfectly inside VW van. Square edges, wheels recessed handles. etc. It would be great if Pelican could make custom square aluminum cases WITH strapping and fastening points. Then I would shift from garbage bags and duffels.

You mean the aluminum trunks that Rich Africans use as luggage?

I dig the small Pelicans, never leave home without one after my last camera met its end out by the Iranian border.

Pelican; Heavy, fragile and space hogs:

Aluminum, cool, generic and beat the hell out of them

American made versions in Long Beach:

but in reality a waterproof duffel with a heavy rubber liner is the way to go.

Some nuts use Pelican cases as portable camp kitchens, and toolboxes:

http://www.expeditionexchange.com/pelican/

That site appears to be some kind of Land Rover fetish outfitting company... The URL used to be "expeditionsexchange.com" which I kept reading as Expedition Sex Change. Sort of like therapistfinder.com.

also, why is there a US flag on a land rover?

I have about a dozen different ways to carry cameras. Pelicans being one. I love the fact I can load it up throw it into the back of the truck and go. They are cumbersome and yes you can break one. While on a shoot in the Bahamas we took a huge wave over the bow all kinds of gear came out of the boat including my pelicans. They floated, it was the only gear we got back.

I beg and plead with my teams NOT to bring pelicans but I'll be goddamned if they don't ALL do it, minus one pharmacist chick y'all might now. They can't help themselves, the urge to look cool at the airport while lugging those sticker covered dinged up cases is just too much. I brought a couple of Pelicans over with me and they never left the house. They need to design some kind of desiccant pack lining and beef up that shit foam they got in there. Everything goes to hell in one of those cases in the jungle. But yes, I feel cool carrying a bunch of them.
Geez,am I NOT ALLOWED TO BE INTENSE FOR JUST 10 FUCKING SECONDS??!!!!!!!

If I can't buy it at the Dollar Store I don't want to hear of it.
I know the law. And I have spent my entire life in its flagrant disregard.

I'm guessing your problem is that they're too well sealed and water tight? The same problem manifests itself with NEMA4X / IP67 rated outdoor electronics enclosures in humid climates, the ones that are fully sealed collect condensation inside them...
