Maxpedition

Postby Atrax » Sat Feb 20, 2010 5:35 pm

I need a new bag, been checking these out, in OD green:

I need a bag for all my day to day Iraq bullshit, but I also want to use it for hiking, traveling, school for the golden day when I leave the Army. I figure the OD green isn't too obviously Army. Anyone got experience using these, or know a better brand?

You can’t go wrong with Maxpedition, I know a guy that has the Condor Pack, he loves it, but you cant fit a laptop with a screen bigger than 15 inches in it

If money is no concern get a Karfu backpack

If you still want a good pack on the cheap go with a Blackhawk pack

Checked out the Blackhawk stuff, and couldn't find shit on Karfu. Ended up going with the Condor II. I'll let you know how it works out.

I have a 5.11 Tactical Rush 24 I'm happy with, but I haven't been too hard on it yet so I can't say how tough it is. It seems really sturdy though.

Kifaru is as close as you can get to having a pack made from the ground up, it is the best and most expensive out there.

I look at the Maxpedition stuff and I dont' get it. Its like faux military stuff for latte swillers. Seems like there are more zippers, straps, Molle thingies and snaps than there is carrying room. Remember I am a disciple of the plastic shopping bag or UN flour sac as a perfectly usable hiking pack. Like all that adventure stuff, you are never going to use it, it screams "yuppie from urban center" and you don't really need a tactical bumbag or attache. In fact if you need a ballistic molle system anything to carry a laptop you are totally busted.

This shit carries up to 60lbs is as about as tactical as a flipflop and makes a great heirloom

Nothing wrong with the minimalist approach. But I actually end up using a lot of the Molle shit on my current bag and don't see that changing.

Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment is anything but. the straps are custom made to get hung up when you bushwhack, they add weight, are ideal skankholders and encourage people to attach things.

This is the Pelton "Carry Your Own Shit Sucka!" System. It discourages heavy loads, has no tactical application, no hydration bladder, and defeats the most stalwart government contractor attempts to charge usurious prices or create must have accessories.

Agree with Pelton. I like the heavy duty shopping/ grocery bags for a lot of the 'street' jobs. They are nicely low key, but are also good for clobbering people with when things get nasty. Try doing that with a backpack. I have thrashed my way through crowds of unwell-wishers with my shopping bags, both arms flailing like windmills in a storm. They usually have nice strong handles and can take a lot of weight, as well as being big/long enough to fit over the shoulder comfortably.

I don't really worry too much about the state of my gear at times like that. My gear won't make it if I don't, although I have been known to stick a phone book in one of the bags for a bit of added oomph in a fight. Being slapped across the chops by a heavy duty shopping bag with a phone book in it is a nice way to feel like you are in Hollywood on Oscar night.

I will throw the gear over my shoulders or neck if I have to, while I let the shopping do the chopping.
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.

RYP, Maxpedition stuff is really well made nylon gear and pretty reasonably priced – they MOLLE stuff for the mil-fanboys (its not like a gear company can survive on military sales only) so don’t let it put you off.

But no BS, it is solid stuff
