At Front Sight, they call those 'racing stripes.' Usually, if a fool shoots himself in the leg, it's because he re-holsters too quickly and the trigger gets caught on something (such as an empty shell-casing that somehow got lodged in the holster; Murphy's Law applies), or he is just a moron who holsters his piece with his finger still in the trigger. Usually the cure for this is to slow down when you are re-holstering. Nobody ever won a gun fight on a speed re-holster.
With the SERPA is supposedly has to do with the position of your finger when pressing the button to release your gun wile drawing
