Medications

Postby thewalrus » Sun Mar 07, 2010 5:02 am

I thought I'd start a thread on essential medications to keep in a first aid kit for travel. Medicine is really lightweight and generally inexpensive in the 3rd world so there's not much excuse to forget it... And your stomach will thank you for packing $1 worth of Imodium when you eat the wrong sort of takeaway pizza and have horrible shits. This is not a list of all the tools/implements to keep in a first-aid kit for external injuries, just medicines. Educate yourself before using this stuff and don't fly through Dubai with anything that has known abuse potential.

Please add ideas to this list:

Flurbiprofen - Non steroidal anti inflammatory pain relief
Ibuprofen 400mg - same general idea
Paracetamol - also known as Acetominophen
Indomethacin - for lightly sprained ankles, etc

codeine - potentially addictive but useful synthetic opiate based pain medicine, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codeine

Fentanyl - extreme emergency only synthetic opiate-based pain reliever, if somebody fucks up their leg really bad... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fentanyl

Diclofenac - can be a tablet or an ointment, used for muscle pain/sprains, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diclofenac

Diphenhydramine - antihistamine, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diphenhydramine

Phenylephrine HCI - a pseudoedphedrine, nasal decongestant
Loperamide - also known as Imodium, helps to stop diarrhea
ORS - oral rehydration salts, comes in packets of powder that each make 1L water, use for diarrhea cases
senna extract - trade name of "Ezilax", laxative
Albendazole, Mebendazole - trade name of "Vermox", worm medicine
Zolpidem (Ambien) - sleeping medication, useful for fixing jetlag
ciprofloxacin 500mg - strong antibiotic
minocycline - tetracycline based antibiotic
azithromycin - antibiotic useful for sinus/nasal infections, other things

Single ointment containing bacitracin, polymyxine, neomycin - antibiotic for cuts and small burns

Not a medication:
Iodone water treatment tablets - when you must drink whatever's available without boiling.

Opium derivatives, lots of them.........maybe some duct-tape too.

Duct tape or STFU tape?
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.

.......that all depends on how the interview goes.

Nice moistened authentic chewing tobacco works nicely on wounds. Please dont try Skoal though, that is chewing tobacco for little kids.

Are there natural versions of the above? At least a few of them?

wow walrus, even trauma kits i used to carry didn't go that deep medwise. Like you said, I would venture from my travels that even in most third world countries you can pick up most of that stuff without a prescription at a local pharmacy at the major cities.

also, bringing in opiate derivatives might end up getting you in some crappy jail or worse

jetlag can be cured with a redbull or alcohol, depending on which way you want to go :)

how about the common stuff
* lip ointment for chapped lips
* moleskin for foot blisters if you're going to be out and about
* a good multi-tool and knife
* talcum powder for either your feet, asscrack, or crotch (SUPER USEFUL)
* band-aids
* tweezers

and if you're really going into the thick of it
trauma kit including:
* abdominal dressing
* asherman chest seal or sterile plastic seal
* quickclot
* duct tape
* medical tape
* cravat or cloth (for sling)
* pressure bandage
* sterile gauze
* survival blanket (those really small pocket sized ones - necessary to reduce chance of hypovolemic shock)
* tourniquet
* tracheal tube of some sort
* Water-jel for burns
* saran wrap for burns or traumatic abdominal injuries
* large bore syringe (sucking chest wounds)
* tarp (to be used as a blanket, shelter, or stretcher)
You paying attention? I'm talking... G5, Pecker! That's how you can roll. No more frequent flyer bitch miles for my boy! Oh yeah! Playa... playa! Big dick playa!
