In your 3rd world expat "bugout bag" article: You saw to buy five SIM cards for the local mobile phone company, load them up with $100 each and test them occasionally? Is it really worth loading $400 or $500 onto some mobile phone service that can only be used in a single country and will probably expire long before you ever use the credit? Wouldn't it be better to suggest a satellite phone?

And it's worth adding to the list "Two $30 Nokia 1100/1200 phones and a charger". If you do get the chance you should have an extra activated throwaway phone to give to a friend.

I usually suggest the “ideal” setup, if 500 bucks is too much for ya then only 2 should be ok.

The article was sort of directed at expats (ones on the company dime) and Contractors, so cash wouldn’t be a big problem for them.

But like any other preparedness advice you can tailor it to your situation and finances

Good advice on a cheap phone, I have a few in my Expat BOB, forgot to add that to the list – will do now – thanks
