GSM sim cards for travelers?

Postby ktrout » Thu May 27, 2010 10:51 pm

Does anyone have a preference for sim cards when traveling outside the US? I found one called Range Roamer that sounds pretty good.

International SIM cards are WAY expensive, just pick up a local SIM for 7 bucks

Thanks. I have a quad band Android phone which should do the trick. If it doesn't I can buy something equally or more cool in Beijing.

You can also buy a cheap phone in a local mobile phone shop for next to nothing

Yeah, but I'm traveling. I need a PC analog and a phone but don't have space for both.

Yeah, about like this:

I traveled Santa Cruz to Boston like that last summer. Carried a piece of shit 8" kiddy eeePC. It will probably not go this time. Nor will the little solar panel. Just doesn't work while traveling.
I also had a GPS that I recorded tracks with, but I'm crossing Eurasia. I don't know how often I'll even be able to use an outlet most of the time. So, I'll be down to occasionally flipping GPS on my phone to get myself out of WTF situations and navigating the old fashioned way.
I have a beautiful thick Columbia pull over that took up most of the left rear bag. That might not even go. It's going to be June, July, August, and a little September after all.
Except I carried 9 to 12L of water in Nevada and Utah. Beats dying.
I'm counting on being able to replace some parts, probably in Urumqi and Moscow. It'll happen if I don't get too much nerve damage in my hands and my knees don't say no. I'm also at the tail end of kicking a middle ear infection.
I'm also hoping I've calculated reasonably for my Kazakhstan and Russian visas. Guessing a 30 day window for crossing completely foreign countries (Kazakhstan, Russia). After crossing China. I should need half that time each for the last two, about 45 for China. I can ride 100 miles a day once I get down to business. Usually 70 overall. The Chinese Consulate was generous. Sixty days, multiple entry for a year. I'm getting excited thinking about playing the game.

I can handle just about anything except welding. Since it's aluminum frame, though, if it breaks it's new bike time.

Full kit. Relatively speaking :).

I was playing around with Google Maps last night and found The route I won't be taking. Cool that they can map about anywhere now. Except Russia, for some reason. The map is broken around the edges of China, too. Otherwise it could route from Beijing to Paris. Nine thousand miles, thereabouts, for that route I won't be taking. Mine calculates out to 7,000-ish. I'm counting on 7,500.

I had a bit of entertainment trying to work on an uncle in law's bicycle in a small town near Chengdu. Piece of junk. Their cables stretch to worthless immediately. Reminds me I need to pack a couple.
The foreigner on the street working on the bicycle attracted a crowd.
I got to play with another in law's 40-some year old rod brake bike. Must have weighed 50 or 60 pounds. At least it worked.
Hopefully I can at least find some Deore Shimano stuff in Urumqi if I need to. Moscow sounds much more likely. I'm planning on at least taking a chain since it's the only real wear item besides tires.
Went up one of the toughest local climbs today (Sierra Azul in Los Gatos). Twenty six hundred feet of steep climbing on gravel, thirty mile round trip with no soreness. GTG.
