Anyone able to recommend Knife Sharpening Kits?

I usually give my knifes to redneck friends for sharpening. But right now I don't have an on-call redneck. So guess I will have to learn to get good at it.

If you want to be oldschool about it, try a 3-grit whetstone (start coarse and work down) followed by a leather strop charged with fine sand. Most blades like to be sharpened at a 15degree angle. A little practice and your knives will be shaving sharp.

You can also get diamond stones and rods, which are a little spendier but quick and... well... made of diamonds.

Finally, I've had good success with the cheapo "V-sharpeners" you can get at any sporting goods store. Good for field-sharpening, kitchen knives, etc. Not ideal for large, long, or thick blades.

+1

That's what I have and if you follow the fine stone with a leather strop like M&C suggests your blade will be fuckin scary sharp

I bought the Gatco kit a month ago and have sharpened all my knives (including the wife's kitchen knives) to razor fucking edges.

A really good product.

Gatco kits are good for the money, but if you have the coin I would recommend either of these.

Best of the best: edge pro apex 5. Except for convex, for which I use a strop; and for more severe, 3000 wet/dry sandpaper over pad or strop.
