Check this post http://androidforums.com/android-applications/55734-android-gps-thread-all-gps-available-android-here.html#post476656 Talk about a lot of what is available.

I really like this one though and has offline maps that can be downloaded ! http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/

Are you interested in navigating the outdoors with topographic maps on your mobile phone or PDA?

If so, you probably want to access these maps offline in an outdoor setting, without relying on a constant internet connection.

BackCountry Navigator can help you find your way in the outdoors, guide you back safely, and help you have more fun while you are out there. In addition:

* You can use maps that are free of charge.
* You won't have to spend time finding, scanning, or calibrating those maps. BackCountry Navigator will download them for you.
* You can even build a map on your PC using the Desktop Edition, and have it all ready to go for your mobile device.

BackCountry Navigator runs on Windows Mobile phones and PDAs, and is now available for Android!

Try BackCountry Navigator today to find out how you can have more fun in the outdoors.

Or you could use the actual sky to find the North Star. The display is much larger.

Having traveled by bicycle with a limited set of maps and a hatred of looking at them I've gotten pretty used to keeping track of the sky pretty much without thinking about it. It's kept me from getting too far out of my way a few times.
With that knot tying guide I could actually get more sophisticated than half hitches.

I remember looking at that back country navigator a number of years ago when it was a lot more expensive. Now that it's Android and only ten bucks I'll have to look at it.

i would agree with cowboy and woodsman, but i think it's the stoner hood in me rather than the nerd part that pulls the ladies.
when they ask how you feeling
you tell em you feeling like something important died screaming
you tell em you feeling like something even more important arrived breathing
something you should probably try feeding

Since this is the first posting of Android apps I've seen, but I've taken a little break from lurking here, I thought I should point out Whisper Systems mobile security apps.

Redphone 0.3 provides end-to-end encryption for your calls, securing your conversations so that nobody can listen in. It's easy to use, and functions just like the normal dialer you're accustomed to. RedPhone uses your normal mobile number for addressing, so there's no need to have yet another identifier or account name; if you know someone's mobile number you know how to call them using RedPhone. And when you receive a RedPhone call your phone will ring just like normal, even if it is asleep.

Redphone uses ZRTP which is Phil Zimmerman's (The guy that brought you PGP) Zfone voice encryption and the calls are made via your data connection, while its not bad, its also really not ready for prime time, but worth trying and it never hurts to have the capability to make an encrypted call if you need to.

TextSecure 0.5 is a drop-in replacement for the standard text messaging application, allowing you to send and receive text messages as normal. All text messages sent or received with TextSecure are stored in an encrypted database on your phone, and text messages are encrypted during transmission when communicating with someone else also using TextSecure.

Both applications are available in the Android market, but its only available now in the U.S.A. :(
