Early to mid early 80s Toyota 4x4 trucks are among the toghest stock four-wheel-drive vehicles I've seen. So are 77, 78, 79 Ford 4x4 Trucks and Broncos. I know in those three years the bodies were galvanized steel and the drive-tranes were really tough. I think 75 and earlier vehicles are less sensitive to emp, which is a different kind of tough.

Thanks, Kestrel.

I've always had a soft spot for the trucks since they have more utility (you can haul shit in the back) than an enclosed vehicle.

Old Broncos, from 66-77 are the best. The closer to 77 you get the better you are.

A Bronco I'm working on for a friend... 3.0" diameter shocks, around 15" of travel per wheel and plenty o' fun.

What's that nylon strap with the brass hook on it?

Limit strap. It stops the suspension from over-extending and topping out the shocks (which will damage them over time) and to keep the steering geometry in check when the front end us fully extended.

Oh, and the attaching eyelet at the end of the strap is Zinc-coated steel and not brass... not that it really matters.

This is my idea of an inexpensive 4x4.

That is the type of vehicle now sitting on Progresso,Mexico's mainstreet after two people were gunned down in broad daylight...a town of maybe 4000 people.

Dude, I will be coming to your town in one, and you earned the right to wear the Gonzo hat and play vehicle commander. Just don't finger the cops, there is nowhere to hide my open beer and they get all nervous about grey armor vehicles with purple velour interior finish.

Hands down - Land Rover Defender. Best 4x4 ever made. Drives like shit, electrics are shit, but rolls over anything and pisses over any other 4x4. I don't think they're exported to certain countries because of safety standards. Don't think it comes in pussy transmission either.

For europeans I say Lada Niva (Lada sold the name Niva to GM I think, so now only 4x4 is the name), a no BS car, some parts are still the same from 1978! High and Low drive, RWD when in 2WD.
Even still able to crank it up with an crank in 2011, no airbag, no crashtest...
12k €uro for a new one in Italy and the only car I know of that can be bought with a snowblade from the factory (no aftermarket).

Those Lada's are as close to my dream car as a production car will ever get.

No love for the unimog?

I don't think you can go wrong with a late 80's Toyota pick up. I sold a 88 long bed one ton to a kid down the street about five years ago, he still has it and I see it all the time. When I sold it, there was about 240K on it. If it had been a 4x4 I would have never sold it.

CAG likes Pinzgauers, SF likes modded Humvees and Hiluxes, SBS likes beater Landys, SEALS like Ford pickups and Land Cruisers, Chicks like Broncos, Yuppies love Range Rovers, Housewives like Yukon XLs. I like a top down Landy Series II but I will take a Hilux in a pinch.
