Postby AztecDave » Sun Dec 09, 2012 8:29 am

anyone got one? am thinking about asking santa for one. specifically the v-lux 40. i have a small casio that does everything i need but have always been intrigued by the leica name, ie, is it worth it.

Leicas are good cameras. I recommend the D-Lux 5. I own one. It is compact, versatile,
and takes razor-sharp shots. it is an excellent travel camera.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/leica/d-lux-4.htm don't know about the five, but I would suggest doing a side by side comparison with the most similar panasonic model.
They tend to be the same camera with a different sticker.

Does one have ample funds for one?
Of all the cameras that a chap could buy, why the Leica? There are hundreds of jolly good digital cameras out there which more than match the Leica for every day use, but which cost substantially less.
It is like buying a Ferrari for going about one's daily business at home, when a Toyota, Nissan or Ford would be just as useful.

Yeah Leica do versions of a few of the Panasonic Lumix models eg. TZ20 and then add their red badge. They allegedly have better firmware than the Lumix versions and usually come bundled with Adobe Elements or Lightroom. Not worth the extra few hundred dollars in my opinion...

I just don't see the price justifying the expense of buying a Leica

The V-Lux 40 is only about $700. For $700 he can get a much better camera. For $1000-$1500 he can get a Leica M5, excellent camera. For $300 he can get a Nikon F4 or F100, both durable but big. I'd get the M5 over the V-Lux any day. IF you're set on the V-Lux get a Lumix, like others have suggested.
