Which SUV?

Looking for a used SUV. Land Rover Disco series 2 or 3 and Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series. Leaning towards the Disco. Which do you prefer?

What are you planning on using it for? Discount 4x4ers are 2nd gen 4runners and early nineties rovers. One can get a top choice pick one of either for under 5k in the us easily.

It will be an everyday driver. Also anywhere from driving on sandy beaches to snow in the mountains to taking on road trips.

I have a Disco 2 and love the truck. Its great off road, comfortable, powerful, and hauls alot of gear. BUT. The friggen thing is always having something go wrong and its always a grand or more to sort it out. Usually never something that will leave you stranded but stuff you need to get sorted if you use it everyday. Fuel economy if you get a gas engine is crap, great powerful V8 but it sucks fuel. LR3s are still quite pricy but capable.

Nothing wrong with the early 4runners or Land Cruisers, I would look for a diesel if you can.

If all you need is a pavement queen then neither of these trucks is a good choice.

what he said. I guy who worked for me had a disco. was always in the shop. otherwise not bad. I'd go for the Toyota myself.

When I was in Tanzania most of the guides used Land Cruisers - they revered the Land Rovers, but said the same thing about the shop time and the expense of upkeep. They seemed to reserve them for the more gnarly off-road stuff. Although the roads in Tanzania are generally pretty rough. My neighbors sons are currently on an adventure using an older Land Cruiser - I got to observe process of readying it for a trip from the PNW to Patagonia. Here's their blog with some shots of the vehicle ---> http://offbelay-americas.com/2014/06/15 ... adventure/

Have you bought anything, missiontripper?

Between your two picks I would go for an FJ-80. Prices have dropped substantially in my area. I saw a two-owner 1993 FJ-80, unmolested (seems like they all have hokey 'custom' work done to them at this point of their life), 180k miles, with recent work done (shocks, tires, waterpump, alternator, battery all done recently at a reputable offroad toyota specialist shop) on the market for $4,800. If there was truth behind the advertisement that's a steal. Seems like only a few years ago a comparable truck would sell for nearly 10k.

I am currently on the hunt for a Left Hand Drive Land Rover Discovery here in the UK to export to Madagascar this August when I move out there. Currently leaning towards a 300 TDI. Can't wait to get it expedition ready!

And one year later the 2001 Disco is gone. Way to many issues. Blown head gasket was the last straw. Very unfortunate. Upgraded to a Nissan. One day I will try a Toyota Land Cruiser or Tacoma.

It was a 2001 Discovery. Many, many issues unfortuanately. had to get rid of it after several months. Maybe one day I can try a Land Cruiser or Tacoma.
