Multi-tools

Postby Medevac » Sat Dec 04, 2004 5:28 pm

I used to have an old trusty Gerber needle nose. The fact that you could open it one handed always made it more practical for me.
Now the complete and utter bastards masquerading as 'airport security' in a certain international airport decided that it was too dangerous for me to have as CHECKED luggage. The fact I was carrying a full trauma kit onto the aircraft, with needles, blades, shears plus some enough drugs to keep Keith Richards occupied for the weekend seemed to pass them by.

So I lost my most treasured possession. (Sentimental value, I'd taken that everywhere)
Oh well, another excuse to rush out and buy some new gadget.
I got tyhe new Gerber, which is now in a stylish flick knife style, but has the leatherman Wave style opening blades on the outside.
Problem is, closing the pliers back into the housing is a bitch. I prefer my old multi-tool really.

What other multi-tools are out on the market now that are worth recommending?
Duct tape is just like the Force - it has a light side and a dark side, and holds the Universe together.

I've got an old Gerber multi-tool that I never really liked cause it closed so tight on the handle that it pinched my fingers. I only used it a few times.

Now, I use a Leatherman Flair, which I like because of the corkscrew and a Wave which I like for all the other tools and for the one-handed opening of the blades. My problem with the Wave is that it's pretty heavy. I try to go as light as possible so I end up with the Flair or even the Micra when I travel. Last month to Colombia, I just brought the Micra.

That's about all I can recommend. I don't have any experience with the other multi-tools, i.e. SOG.

If you're still interested in the old-style Gerber, maybe we can trade for something.

I use The Cybertool:

A more expensive one has the saw feature , which is great for cutting through drywall and drop tile, but mine doesn't so I got a cheap multitool for $12 that includes a hammer also. A few quick freelance gigs that I would respond to online made these things pay for themselves and more very quickly, without me having to lug around a toolkit.

But the whole airport security thing does suck...I could do more good guy type McGyver stuff if I could have them on me at all times rather than checking them with my bags.

Or the worst is making the mistake of going to the DMV or some other petty goverment place and having the drones tell you to take it outside and hide it somewhere or have them "throw it away" (meaning take them for themselves I assume)

I love the leatherman wave, except for the one simple face that I took it to the Amazon, and the locks that keep open the outside blades broke. All of them. In a couple days. I'm assuming its because of the moisture. One of these days I'll get my lazy ass around to sending it back in. How long is the warranty?
